Turns out when they changed the starter (original problem) the little connection at the end of the positive wire at the starter had bent and was grounding...

    It sounds like your positive cable to the starter was grounding out. The positive cable is strapped to the engine via an insulated bracket in a couple different spots. On a 15+ year old car stuff get's brittle. I would replace all of the cables for peace of mind.

    89 2.3 n/a won't start

    TFI module on the side of the distibutor. Very common on these cars. You will need to get the tool to change it or grind down a socket to do it I think it is like a 1/4 inch or something like that not positive though. It may start back up if it sits for s while but it will do the same thing...

    O2 sensor, if I can get my car to pass in Spokane running like it is in my signature with no emissions stuff at all that n/a should not be too hard to get to pass.

    You can keep it auto but plan to change soon if you are looking for HP. As far as the computer, there are some you can use and when you change to a 5 speed you can still use the same computer. I think it is the la2 but someone will correct me if I am wrong.

    Yeah I got an average of 22-31 mpg on a 2400 mile road trip to Southern California in all sorts of conditions running exactly the same as what my signature says.
