    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

Got back to working on the car today. Installed the starter, speedo cable and bolted the exhaust back up. I was able to do the trans swap without removing my headers which was a nice time saver. I even wired the backup light switch which before this I had hooked up to a toggle switch. I was...

Drive shaft weld and balance costs

The flywheel issue solved itself, the one that I removed (not sure if it was original or not) had a lot of tooth wear and some hot spots on the surface. I ordered and installed a new steal flywheel. My driveshaft is at the shop now but has been finished (just need to pick it up). I had...

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

I believe that you are correct 65, the level does not seem like it's replaceable. I'll have to see how it is when the job is done but I'll probably get a Pro 5.0 and use the Hurst lever that I already have for a T-5. That way I can use the knob that I already have which has my line-loc switch...

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

What shifter are you using w/ your T-5? The trans I bought came w/ a B&M short throw shifter, very nice but I need to lean forward to reach it. I was hoping I could just change the lever but it is very different than a Hurst style lever attachment and doesn't look like it would be doable...

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

Rebuilt the clutch linkage. Aside from being a pain in the ass to re-install, no real problems. Then I went to install the bell housing and found that the fulcrum adapter, which was supposed to have been installed, was not. So, I made a templete of the bolt holes on my early bell and drilled...

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

Thanks for the heads up. I went to get an alum shaft today but the local yard is a mess and I didn't feel like climbing under an Explorer in the mud to pull one so I just gave my original steel shaft to the driveshaft shop. I'll call them w/ an exact length on Mon and have them work on it next...

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

Flywheel, throwout bearing and pilot bearing arrived today. Installed the pilot, flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. Have to go out of town for a couple of days but hopefully the z-bar bushings will come and I can rebuild and re-instal that Fri pm. Planning on getting the trans back in on...

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

I just pulled my z-bar out and ordered new bushings for it. Definitely a little sloppy. Also popped the pilot bearing out. Just waiting on my flywheel now.

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

I decided to order the rest of the parts I needed from Modern Driveline (just to make sure I got the right stuff). Ordered a 157 tooth, 28oz imbalance, steel flywheel that will accept a 10 1/2" clutch. Also ordered a new throwout bearing and pilot bearing. Should arrive early next week. I...

Nope, billet steel. But I've told that the difference in performance between cast and billet isn't noticable unless you are running upwards of 7rpm or so. So, I'll save the $ and get a cast iron piece. Here's the billet steel flywheel from Mustangs Unlimited, fyi Mustangs Unlimited - The...

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

Got the trans out today. Problem was broken fulcrum bolts. I suspect the bolts that were in there were not a high enough grade. Flywheel had some bad teeth and the surface had some hot spots. I think I'm going to replace it with basically a stock flywheel. 157 tooth, 28oz, compatable w/ a...

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

Sounds like you have a similar set as mine Pony. Reasonably modified 289 and I'm staying with the mechanical linkage as well. I have an early 28oz flywheel and balancer now but will be using a late model 10.5" clutch and I think my flywheel needs replacing anyway. Mustangs Unlimited has a...

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

Got everything ready to put the trans now. A good friend of mine who is much more knowledgable than I am is helping me this weekend. I wish I could get things done that quick but I'll probably just have the trans, bell, clutch and flywheel out this weekend and I need to see if I need to order...

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

Well, finally got the garage cleaned out and got the Stang into it. Put it up on ramps and pulled the exhaust and drive shaft yesterday. I'll unhook the speedo cable and get everything ready to pull the trans either tomorrow or Sun. Feels good to see some progress! :nice:

Drive shaft weld and balance costs

Thanks, I'm guessing that alum would be a little more $ since it is a little harder to work with but that gives me a good reference point. I'll wait until I install the trans to see what length shaft I need then decide if it makes sense to find a junkie alum shaft or have my steel one cut.

Did you guys use steel or alum shafts?

Drive shaft weld and balance costs

Can anyone give me an idea of the costs for cutting/welding/and balancing either a steel or aluminum driveshaft? Also, stock or billet steel flywheel. What are the benefits of billet steel and do they justify the cost difference? Thanks for the input!

    Starting my T-5 swap, finally.

From what I've been told, the flywheel imbalance is based upon your engine, not the trans and the teeth has more to do w/ the starter. I have a 289 and was told a 28oz imbalance is what I need and if you're using a late model clutch then you need a 10.4" clutch pattern and a 157 tooth ring if...

Yeah, I was planning on installing the trans before I cut/bought a driveshaft as I've been told that the measurement is hard to calculate beforehand. Thanks for all the other advice, it's a huge help to have the insight of the folks that have already done this upgrade.

67GTFB, that is exactly how I'm currently set up to do the swap. I did look into the roller z/bar kit but it's like $265 or so I don't know. I'll get a new early model throw out bearing and see how my flywheel looks when I pull the toploader. I know that I'll probably have to cut about 1" off...
