    I am pretty sure it can burn enough to drop the level over time without being easily visible. Maybe it is burning it more at highway speeds. It would be hard to notice it then.

    If it is not leaking on the ground it has to be burning it. Try pulling the plugs and checking the deposits.

    I would go 3.73 with a manual and 4.10 with an auto, but thats just me. Rebuilding the locker is pretty simple. The spring is a PITA. I bought my kit at the dealer, but there should be aftermarket sources.

    There should be a 3 before the L. It should be 3L08 whick means you have 3.08 gears with a Locking differential. I don't know what the others mean. It is probably a date code or assembly plant code.

    Sounds like an electrical connection problem at the fuel level sender. I do not know why the check engine light would come on. Is the warranty over? I guess so or you would have taken it to the dealer. I had a customer bring in a car that the power windows and locks would work erratically...

    I remember a while back there was a rash of bad adj cables. Did you use the same brand cable each time? Is the clutch pedal hard to depress? If not the cable should not stretch unless it is defective. You might try a stock Ford cable with the aluminum quad & a firewall adjuster.
