    Still sounds like cam timing to me. A quick way to tell if the cam phasing is out is to do a compression test of both banks.

    YES such an install require the same expertise as a gear install. The pinion depth should not change. But the backlash and gear position need to be the same as before after changing the carrier.

    One of the difference between a thicker head gasket and more dish in the piston is the amount of piston to head clearance or squish. You normally want to run more clearance in a boosted motor than a N/A motor, but this does depend on the amount of boost.
