    Also depends on what brand you got (cheaper = more noise from my experience) I am running Crane 1.7s atm and they still make a little noise but its not NEAR as bad as those lousy proforms were that came in it.

    1.7 rockers always tick like a sewing machine?

    What brand of rollers are they? ... I made the mistake way back in buying a cheapass set of proform roller rockers and there was NO way to get them to quiet down unless you did go to the extent of getting different length pushrods even though they said "bolt on"

    If it were a bearing on the bottom end that was only knocking when you put tension on it the sound would be alot different than a rocker arm tick kind of sound or is that just the rhythm?

    If you just plan on a temp band-aid until you can do a tear down give that Lucas oil additive a shot I've had that quiet down a few ticks and knocks till I could get to them later.

    clutch popping

    Definitely your quadrant than if you still have the stock plastic one .. especially once you put an aftermarket clutch in that has a little more pressure than stock that plastic thing snaps fast.

    Timing Question!

    I have about the same setup as you and installed 1.7s w/ no problems, I'd look elsewhere for the cause. If you have a cold air intake try clocking (rotating) the MAF sensor, they get funny readings off the curve in that pipe sometimes I know it affected how mine idled alot.

    I've heard alot of people just jack the front end of the car up a fair amount so all the air bubbles head to the highest point (radiator) and then run it that way to work air bubbles out .. I can't vouch as to how well this works, I normally just topped it off and then went out for short test...
