    Are 2.3 (N/A) and 5.0 starters interchangeable

Not interchangable. but there is a high torque starter on later cars my 93 mustang has one as do rangers. It does require a minor wiring change due solinoid being on the starter. Also if you buy a genuine Motorcraft one it will come with instructions and wire to change over. Motorcraft no longer...

how do I put a MECHANICAL fan on my engine?

The early and mid 90's rangers have a clutch fan. I used one on a Pinto :D it works great compared to a stock pinto fan. the Ranger water pump has a smaller diameter shaft than the Pinto/early mustang. I would not be dumping the electric as they are plenty reliable. besides it is free...

have some money to spend what mods should i do

Buy a set of sway bars and a trac loc diff. and maybe a deeper gear set. those will leave you with money left and show the biggest gains in driveability. next buy a big valve ported head. you will see real gains especially at higher rpms. There I spent your $2500 :D

    Weakest link(s) of 2.3l?

The weak links are stock pistons, the hydralic lifters as stated will pump up and create a mess. for $1.60 you can add about 400 rpm to the lifters. The other discoveries we have made is that with a big cam and springs every once in a while you will break a lifter boss in the head. also the...
