(I think) Timing chain issue... might explain dyno/starting/timing issues..

Couldn't hur to see if its locked out I guess. I just sorta doubt thats the problem since I know my stocker distributor wasn't and the new distributor didn't change anything when we put it in.

(I think) Timing chain issue... might explain dyno/starting/timing issues..

Oh. Well. Yeah I guess I could see where you got that. Going to have to edit that post. To correct... I do believe the timing stays set once we get it running. I don't believe the problem is that it is moving on me, rather... I cannot get the engine to run when the timing is not in the...

(I think) Timing chain issue... might explain dyno/starting/timing issues..

we used the timing light to check my brothers stock 289's timing (in his 67 cougar) and it was working fine (showed about 10 degrees initial timing on that motor). so you can eliminate the timing light, I believe, unless my crazy ignition is causing some sort of interference that his stock...

(I think) Timing chain issue... might explain dyno/starting/timing issues..

Heh, I'm not sure where the idea that the timing was 'jumping' around came from. In both this thread and others on other forums it seems that terms getting introduced somewhere and I'm not sure where. I don't know what timing 'jumping' means exactly, but I'm pretty sure mine isn't doing it...

Coated. I believe we checked the endplay as per the instructions.

(I think) Timing chain issue... might explain dyno/starting/timing issues..

Could it be something as simple as moving the spark plug wires over one way or the other? What would the effect of doing that be? I think I asked this previously (could have been on another forum). I believe my current ones are right (and they're in the right order) but perhaps they're...

(I think) Timing chain issue... might explain dyno/starting/timing issues..

I don't think anyone on here's an idiot and i appreciate the help, but your tone when you said I'd been doing months of 'pointless' troubleshooting wasn't helpful and was insulting. I truly do appreciate and consider everyone's input on here, and if I overreacted I apologize... I'm frustrated...

I am sure we're using the #1 cylinder plug wire. The timing light could be off I suppose. Guess we could buy another one and see if it works.

Pointless? Um... k. My MSD worked fine previously for ~6 years and I was very happy with it. Unless there's some fundamental reason the MSD is causing this problem, I don't see any reason to get rid of it. I have called MSD, for what its worth. They were about as stumped as I was.

(I think) Timing chain issue... might explain dyno/starting/timing issues..

I'm using the Ford Racing 9mm wires at the moment. I had been using some 8.5mm Pertronix ones earlier when I first had issues, but they were about the first thing I changed out (there was some corrosion on them so they were one of the more obvious potential issues). I know for a fact the...

(I think) Timing chain issue... might explain dyno/starting/timing issues..

As I said (i know i'm verbose but i swear if you read my whole post i cover most the details :) ), the Holley manual DID say to check it with the engine running. My engine was apart, so for the moment thats impossible. I did not know how much difference it'd make. I will check it again when...

(I think) Timing chain issue... might explain dyno/starting/timing issues..

Update. Used the Summit Piston stop (and timing tape) and determined... my timing marks are right on the money. Verified twice, using two different methods. Definitely right on. Also physically watched all the rockers open the valves, so there shouldn't be an issue of a collapsed...

Losing idle at traffic light with A/C on.

That vacuum looks about right based on the cam. Mine makes a little more at idle (and isn't tuned right) but your cam has more lift and a bit more duration.. the RPM cam is pretty aggressive. What does vintage auto say you should lose RPM-wise at idle when you turn the A/C on? With any A/C...

    Which 351 headers etc?

IMO the porting only really would seem to have utility in applications where stock appearance is desired or where money is really, really at a premium. Before they had 65-66 swap headers, porting the stock manifolds (or modifying other headers) was your only option... so I would have...

66 swerves BAD under heavy throttle!

I think the box, alignment and rearend are much more likely sources of your error. Step 1: Replace that box Step 2: Get it aligned Step 3: See if its still doing it, then consider checking on the rearend Step 4: ? Step 5: Profit

Instructions on how to jet a Holley Street Avenger?

Is that the only combo you tried? If its easy, might be worth jumping them up one more time to see if it helps any more. Good to hear its that easy, that way i can make a mild jump now and fine-tune it on the dyno at a later time. 57fairlane... could you elaborate on the 'milling'? I was...

    Which 351 headers etc?

I don't think Tri-Ys will work on a 65/66. I'd just go with the Hooker Super Comps. Great brand, great performance, shouldn't have any fit issues, godo quality. Not cheap but not particulary ridiculous either (~$300 iirc).

    Which 351 headers etc?

Heddman makes swap headers for 351w equipped 65/66 with 1 5/8" primaries (for mild engines), and Hooker makes Super Comps for them as well (if you've got a more serious build). The Heddmans are cheap... less than $150 shipped. The super comps are pricier but very nice.

    Skinny on the 351

Actually I've always called the 351C a small big block and the 351w a big small block as well. Actual deck height, displacement and size aren't necessarily what defines that for me.. after all, there are plenty examples of single engine families with the same size block spanning both small and...

Instructions on how to jet a Holley Street Avenger?

Well, the other thing I was hearing is that you don't want to just bump it up a couple increments... you might have to do that 3 or 4 times before you get where you want. did a mini search and... (yes, i've asked this question a couple times and dragged my feet on it... see talk section for...
