What the heck is that smell

Did you check the fluid levels in your gearbox and diff? When they get warm they can push fluid out the overflow tubes. Maybe the overflow tubes weren't set up properly. It's possible you smelled the fluid coming out of them.

    1971 Intake on 1968 302 Block??

To answer your question directly - yes, the intake only could have been replaced. So the numbers on the intake do not tell you what the block is. Also, the numbers on the block do not tell you what the engine internals are - anything from the timing set to the cam or the entire rotating...

    Curious wet spot

I would have a pro take take of it. It shouldn't cost very much, even if the pro decides to replace the gasket. No I don't think you should goo on more sealant. I'm all for DIY, but glass is one thing I generally leave to the pros.

Radiators and cooling problems my observations

Yes rich = cool. Setting timing by feel is a joke to me, but then I'm a fairly anal guy and I like numbers and equations. Yes ideal timing will be different for different engine configurations, but I like knowing what the number is and knowing I'm in the ballpark. Timing lights don't cost...

Radiators and cooling problems my observations

How many CFM do the electric fans move? Do the electric fans have shrouds that force the air from the fan to go through the radiator? If they have shrouds, are they sealed to the radiator, or is there clearance between the fan shrouds and the radiator? I have seen a lot of threads through the...

    Belt melting

I'm glad you solved the problem. I will stop trying to help you understand how belts and pulleys work.

    Belt melting

Easy enough to take the alternator and get it tested. I hope you find the problem.

    Belt melting

The speed of the belt has nothing to do with the length of the belt. The belt doesn't rotate at engine rpm. It rotates at a speed defined by the diameter of the crank pulley. I think it should be elementary, but maybe you sincerely don't understand. I'll try to explain. Let me step you...

    Belt melting

No I think what was posted before makes perfect sense. The pulley has a v shape, as does the belt. If the belt is wider it has to ride farther out on the pulley. For every time the pulley rotates, the belt moves a distance equal to the circumference of the crankshaft pulley (at the location...

    Can't identfy vibration

Don't balance your axles unless you're sure that's the problem. Did you swap axles right before you got the vibration? If you changed the trans and then got the vibration, why not start at the trans when looking to cure the vibration problem?

Rust repair on two 1965 Mustangs

Nope, but my convertible is extremely rusty. My convertible is also an original 6 cylinder car, so it isn't overly collectible. I'm going to fix it, not because it's important to me to own a nice '70 convertible, but because I think it will be fun to do the work - learning as I go. I'm just...

Wtf is wrong with this combo?

Gotcha! :) Yeah mechanical secondaries can be great if you really know what you're doing. I'm not much of a carb guy. I think Holley continues to decrease the number of applications they recommend mechanical secondaries for - possibly due to customer feedback. You have to have a really...

Straight 6 or 289 for a daily driver?

Good thought. I had a 250 6 in my '70 originally. It was fine for driving around. I put a 302 from a 91 Mustang in there - it made a lot more power but it's obviously heavier when you go to turn corners. A 300 six would be a good way to go even though they didn't come originally in our cars...

Straight 6 or 289 for a daily driver?

The 6 or 289 are both fine. I personally would do a GT-40 302 from a '96 Exploder. Better power, you can go with a roller cam, 1 piece rear main seal, probably pay less for something in better condition as well. If you decide to rebuild it you can drop in an affordable 347 stroker kit. I...

Wtf is wrong with this combo?

I disagree with the above post that mechanical secondaries are preferred over vacuum. The great thing about vacuum secondaries is they open the correct amount to supply what the engine needs. If you think the carb is restricting the engine you can check vacuum at the intake during a dyno pull...

    351 Windsor

I think that if it were a Chivy motor in a Camaro you could probably run 87 octane and make 800 hp. Since it's a Ford motor and I'm an old school guy, it's more complicated than that in my mind. Good luck.
