    IF your is making a loud whining sounds, then it's probly toast. If the pump doesn't seem to be making sounds, but the car wants to stall when you turn the wheel, more than likely have a bad rack and pinion.     I have always, loosen my motor mounts from the k member and put a jack under the transmission... and jacked it up enough to change the gasket..... you should get a one piece rubber gasket, then you shouldn't have any leaks
