There are obviously better tools for this than just the eye, but FWIW that is what I used. It took a long time and alot of patience. Notching piston
When in doubt pull the clay out. You should always check the piston to valve clearence. With that being said the 165's sould be fine with the stock cam. I put 185's on my wifes car (stock short block) and I had to notch the pistons. Derick- smokedu1
