Emissions... there has to be a better way

Trinity: I do understand the science behind the emission control currently in use. I do not doubt the physics and chemistry behind them. I doubt the economics, especially when it comes to catalytic converters. Take another look at the math I originally posted... if Mustang owners alone are...

    IRS poll

Fallacy #1: if a large number of people do something, it must be right. See my previous comment comparing IRS with vinyl tops and FWD. Besides, it's not really true that "virtually everyone" is buying IRS. The best-selling vehicle in the U.S. is the F150, and it has a live axle. Mustang is...

Emissions... there has to be a better way

Recently, some projects I have been working on recently have really made me think about the way we deal with auto emissions. The basic approach seems to be to make very small reductions in the emissions released by brand new cars, at the expense of maintainability and simplicity, and without...

    IRS poll

I can't believe anyone would pay actual U.S. dollars for a car with IRS. The fundamental idea of IRS is to allow one wheel to move up without forcing the other one down, and vice-versa. I can't see where that is an advantage, unless a car is being constantly run through big potholes...

    HP Gain Estimate?

Just guessing, I would say anywhere from 5-20hp.

    02 stock intake

Sure, I would imagine it's worth something to anyone whose trying to put the '99-and-up cylinder heads on an early 4.6L motor. They will need to get that PI intake somehow. What is the aluminum crossover? I have an '01 (albeit a late production one)and I've never heard of that.

BTW, if you hate spending large sums of money, why do you want to buy a house? :)

i need some opinions please !!!!!!!!

Decisions, decisions... I would like to hear the technical reasoning behind changing the control arms. I know this is a popular mod... but if the new control arms reduce the 'squat' of the chassis setup, won't the result be that the rear end will be even more overwhelmed with torque? I'm...

    Stuck crankshaft pulley

I finally got it off. It was a matter of applying Liquid Wrench over and over again, pulling as hard as I could, attacking it with a prybar, etcetera. Once I got the bolt out, I think the hangup was the "key" that fixes the pulley in place on the crank. The key is not supposed to hold the pulley...

    Stuck crankshaft pulley

I am trying to change my timing belt on an '85 Mustang LX (without a turbo). I can't figure out why the pulley on the front of my crankshaft won't come off. I have the bolt off, and can move backward and forward about 1.5", but it gets hung up coming forward and it won't come off. I thought...

    Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

Just a few tips on warranty work: I wouldn't cite the TSB number, I would familiarize myself with its contents and innocently cite the symptoms to the Service Manager in a nonchalant way. If you approach a technical person with the attitude that you know their job and you've got it all...

    Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

John: my 2001 GT owner's manual recommends "Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF" in the Service Station Information section at the back of the book. I guess that doesn't necessarily mean the trans was filled with that type of lube originally, but it sure seems to imply that it was. Jorge: Your comment...

Wait a minute: are you sure that your car isn't a Z28, and that you're not trying to shift from 1st to 2nd? Because that sounds a lot like the CAGS skip-shift "feature" GM built into the last LS1 cars. :D Seriously, I don't mean to make fun of your problem, just of the Z28. But you might...

    Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

I agree that you have been let down by your dealer. And I am not denying there is a problem here. But I don't think the root cause if the transmission itself. I think the problem is a breakdown in the maintenance (and in some cases the operation) of the vehicle. The fact that dealers aren't...

Motor mounts I was on JEGS.COM today and I happened upon something relevant to this thread. This is from a PDF instruction sheet talking about solid motor mounts: "Solid mounts limit engine movement and make linkages operate smoother." The category of "linkages" includes your shifter and...

    Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

I hope you're all reading the whole thread. I don't think a recall will happen, and there are some suggestions here that will help you. There is a lot of "venting" on this thread, but there is some good information as well. I still think this thread should be locked because anything useful...

    Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

That doesn't sound like the exact problem being discussed here. The wailing noise seems like a rear-end problem. The grinding sound is probably due to the drivetrain play / loose mounts that are endemic to these cars. I would try and get Ford to fix the wailing, but would blow off the grinding...

    Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

The internal rails do make a differnce. But there are still situations where mount wear could be a factor... e.g. if the transmission is sitting in a position that is rotated slightly to one side or the other, you will basically be missing gears (and grinding) unless you are compensating for the...

    Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

I think the lower capacity helps the fluid warm up faster. It may also prevent windage (churning). I agree. I do think a stronger synchro would increase shifting effort. If the position of the transmission is unpredictable our out-of-spec, then the position of the shift rails in each...

    Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

I understand your numbers, I just don't think that 0.4% of people having trouble with a particular manual transmission means anything. Now we all know the real number is higher (not everyone uses StangNet), but because of the censorship that's happened here we will never know how high. When...
