    new carburetor

500 cfm is plenty. The stock 4100 carb was something like 420cfm. When you get too big with a stock motor you will wind up with less throttle response. 500 cfm, though, should not be too much.

    Trying to set my timing

Modern Ford aftermarket heads will want 32-36 degrees, depending on the head. AFRs like a max of about 34 degrees, don't know what your Edelbrocks will like. Unless you do what D.Hearne suggested about setting the timing mechanically, you have to wait for the timing light before messing with it...

    Trying to set my timing

brianj5600 is correct. Setting the distributor by eye is tough. You will be surprised what the light tells you vs. what you thought was going on as a result of the method you used. If the rotor is pointing to #1 plug wire when the #1 piston is at TDC, then you are either okay, or 180 degrees...

    '66FBGT 289 Engine Rebuild Estimate

185's are too big for a 289, in my opinion. You would be better off with 165s and 58cc chambers (shaved to 54cc would be better on a 289 or 302). I wouldn't use 185s unless stroking the motor, or building a real hipo 302.

    Well, that's one, anyway.

    help w/ 289 head/intake/carb/cam decision

What really matters is dynamic compression - the compression that the motor sees when running. This is influenced by static compression and the the cam profile. The more overlap there is (time when both intake and exhaust valves are both open around TDC of the intake stroke). Overlap bleads off...

    Header / exhaust recomendations

The Tri-Ys made after the Shelby GT350 pattern are sized with 1 1/2" primaries. That's just fine for a 289 or mild 302 and they are cheaper than most. They are also not coated (typically) and will rust up pretty quick if you don't do anything about it. I have Doug's Tri-Ys (1 5/8" primary and...

    '66FBGT 289 Engine Rebuild Estimate

The head price includes roller tip rockers and hardened pushrods, so the deal isn't as bad as all that. Those are probably Comp Magnum roller tip rockers. They have a sled base. They're fine for a good budget build. This question is always tough to answer. If the shop really does a good job...

    clutch / brake pedal??

The pedals mount to a shaft (both brake and clutch). The mating is a bushing and it wears. Your new clutch has a long arm and new mounting point and this accentuates the feel of sloppiness dur to the worn bushing. The solution is to rollerize these joints. Go here...

    help w/ 289 head/intake/carb/cam decision

tosc: Yeah, just keep the combustion chamber no larger than 60cc and you will be able to get at least 9:1 compression, that's fine for iron heads like the GT40s. You will have to have the combustion chambers cc'd if you buy used, 'cause who knows what's been done to them? Keep the cam small to...

    help w/ 289 head/intake/carb/cam decision

What you have to be concerned about first is compression. The 289 used small combustion chambers - smaller than 302 heads. Do a search for "compression calculator" and you'll find lots of sites that will compute compression given input of a few variables. You want something around 9.5:1...

    Wet spark plugs....

Your firing order is dependent on how your cam is ground. If it is ground as a 351W or 5.0 (which uses the 351W order), then the 13726548 is correct. The other order is the 289/early 302 order. If you have a cam card, it should have the firing order. If you don't have the cam card, call your...

2bav8: Don't touch a thing. Yours is just fine, even though it has, as I remember, 15" wheels. Despite what I said above (16-18" being my preference), your car sits and looks great. I think stance must have a lot to do with it.

The more I see of it, the more I get used to it. Anything 16-18" is fine, in my opinion.

How much good are Tri-Ys with my set up?

CHP uses Probe slugs. Check with them, but their older pistons don't use the support. Otherwise, specify Mahle pistons with your supplier.
