05 GT Rear Axle Whine

I have an 05 GT which appears to be whining more from the rear axle lately. It came stock with 3.55s. Anyone had this problem? What's the cause? I didn't seem to notice this until the last couple of weeks. I have 17K miles on the car.

I have the same problem. They have attempted to fix it 6 times now. Including a complete axle assembly. No go. Their rear gears are now made by Moser and they are having some problems with them. They ended up sending a Ford "Engineer" out to look at my car and he said it's "normal" Asshat. I ended up getting a check cut to me for two months car payment from Ford for me to get it fixed somewhere else! ha! I would just bring it to them and let them attempt to fix it. If they can't, believe me, calling Ford Customer Service will pay off in the end. The higher you go up the ladder, the easier it is to get what you want.

Is this only happening while turning? Primarily at lower speeds?

tell us a bit more about the whine; i have an 05 that developed a loud whine at about 2000 miles and it only happened between 55 and 65 mph; took it in and they replaced the rear end and since then no problems - about 20 months.

No, it is a high speed gear whine. Ford fixed the low speed rear axle "moan" back in January. Now the car make a higher pitched whine at highway speeds - 50-80 MPH - which is becoming unbearable!

No! It's making the gear or axle whine only when traveling at high speeds - 50-80 MPH. The slow speed axle "moaning" was fixed by Ford back in Janaury. What the heck is going on with this now???

I'd take the "moaning" at slow speeds back in a heartbeat if I could get rid of the high speed "whinning"!

Did they say what was causing the "moan?" It feels like an overly tight differential to me, like a pseudo-spool.

I've been in cars with gear whine before. The moan is pleasant by comparison. Neither is really acceptable on a new car like these, IMO.

The "moan" was the TSB fix that was on some of the early cars. It only occurred at low speeds while turning. In my car it only occurred when I made a right turn at a stop sign. Other than the moan, it caused a bit of "binding of the rear axle - my rear tires sounded like they where scrubbing. Now, they fixed that under the TSB (I can't remember the #). SInce then, the "whining" has become unbearable!!!

I need to make them tear it apart again. Any other thoughts?

Nope. Rear-ends are something of a "mystery-box" to me. *pauses for snickering*

I would just take to them and tell them to fix it. I don't care how, just do it. Keep making them do it until it gets done right, just so I could screw it all up a couple years later when I had gears put in.

Is it possible that they shimmed it wrong when they did the rear axle TSB a couple of months ago??? Again, the whine seems to occur after the car has been driven a few miles - maybe after teh axle heats up???

Is your car an automatic or a stick? I'm thinking I see more of the rear end problems noted here from folks with the stick shift, but maybe its just me. Just curious if that is a good observation and what it may mean.

It probably is something along those lines. If they took all that out to fix the TSB, then it is likely that they didn't re-install it correctly. It could also be as simple as them not putting enough/proper gear oil in there.

I had the same problem with my 06 mustang GT. I took it into a local dealer (Ray Skillman Ford) to have it looked at. They performed the TSB and said it was fixed. I picked the car up and the Whine was worse than when I droped it off, not to mention that they damaged the driveshaft when they put it back together, and they ran the front of the car into something damaging the front bumper cover and they also scratched the drivers side door and passenger side rear quarter panel and burned the convt. top. And they did not repair any of the damage.

Anyway, I ended up taking the car to another dealer because I was never going to let Skillman Ford touch my car again. The other dealer took the rearend apart and found that Skillman Ford never shimmed the ring and pinion and they left the bolts loose causing the gears to start eating each other. So I contacted Ford about the problem and they told the other dealer to fix the rearend.
So they replaced all the parts that were damaged and inspected everything. I got the car back the other day and there is absolutly no noise from the rearend and is drives 100% better than it did before.

The worse part is that Ford just gave Ray Skillman a little slap on the hand for all the trouble that they caused me.

But if it is making a noise still, something is not right and it is not normal!!!

Well, they did the "simple" TSB" to fix the rear end whine. Just a bit of the special gear oil - "friction enhancer". The whine seemed better for about 5 miles, now it's back! I will need to get it in for service again...

Ray Skillman Ford is located in Greenwood, Indiana. Just south of Indianapolis. I guess there are alot of other people that have had problems with them also. And the sad part is that they are suppose to be one of the bigger mustang dealers.
