Well, I’m back to a “normal” work schedule. We were busy yesterday as well ( like normal) I sold two cars. Despite that,.........it’s far from normal.
I planned to let this thread keep sliding into obscurity ( at the bottom of page two,) until it was running, or about to be. I guess I’ll settle for the latter.
The coils came in yesterday. Since I’m back in normal work mode, that leaves any progress to be made relegated to my day off. Today, is now my day off.
And since I’m talking about the coils, they are significantly bigger than the D585 units. The bolt hole spacing is also wider, the things are longer, they are heavier, thicker, and taller. Nothing fits. I cannot use the old bunch of screws and spacers either, as the coil body is thicker. Im gonna need longer screws, and drill more holes.
Additionally, they are GROUNDED. Of the 5 wires that goes to the coil pack, 3 of them are grounds. One to the block, one to the battery, and one to the ecu directly. I don’t know why other than ensuring that these things won’t misfire from lack of it, but they are.
The one wire I had to add was the direct ecu ground. Fortunately ( like I almost expected I’d need it) I left one of the ecu ground wires unconnected, and accessible under the dash. All I’ll have to do is get a wire to it from the new coil packs now.

My new replacement Corbeau will be here today as well. 4 bolts to bolt the bracket to it, four nuts to hold the whole mess in the car. ( If only everything was as easy)

So, over in BMW world, are there pandemic deals to be made or is it just, hey you came here because you can afford it? My truck is only 2 years old, but with talk of Congress passing incentives for people to buy new cars, I may consider upgrading my Ram. Just depends on how much the socialists want to give me.

They are offering a .9 to 72, 0% to 60, loyal owner BMW lease deals with no pymt for the first two months....blah, blah, blah.
New car business is in the toilet. They are really only selling used stuff, and mostly used stuff with more than 3 letters in the brand.
Two things. First, when I clicked on your thread, it took me to the beginning. Crazy that you’ve been working on the Monster for 7 years... Secondly, what did you get done today?

Edit: over 6.5 years.

I have never had a car as long as I’ve had this one.

You'd think that if I had the whole day and all I had to do was drill some holes, and mount 6 coils, rewire the connectors, and screw four bolts into the base of a new seat, I’d at least‘ve had that to show.

Nope.

I got all of the new holes drilled, the longer bolts purchased, ( had to go back twice), and got them mounted, using 1/2” spacers.

The coils still don’t stand off the plate high enough to allow the plate to sit down on the cam covers properly.

I got all of the connectors rewired, including the additional ground wire, but for some reason, one of the six “ legs” that comes off the main trunk line is now just a little too short. And as a result, a little too tight. I didn’t have anymore the braided nylon wrap that I used to cover the wiring in, so I had to try and reuse it. That didn’t turn out as hoped. The main trunk line can no longer be put under the plate, and it has to sit on top....exposed. It wasn’t wired to be exposed, so I wrapped it in electrical tape.

I hate the way the whole freakin thing looks.....I’m redoing it.

I did test them. They work. Allllll of them work. But that don’t matter, I’m gonna cut the harness up.

Here I sit on my couch at home with my kids. They are playing in various parts of the house, and I just pulled up YouTube on our TV. The first video that was suggested is ironically a compilation of 2JZ sounds. Mostly Supras doing pulls and donuts, but at any rate, that engine and subsequent turbo sounds is indeed pretty damn cool sounding. You get the Monster wrapped up the way you want it, and you have yourself and very cool, unique and potentially fast car on your hands. With all you’ve done inside and out, I don’t know why you should ever sell it.

PS, glad your furlough didn’t last too long and cause you unneeded worry.

To think 6.5 years and how many miles did you put on it before bailing on the 250 and throwing caution to the wind and going all hiphop with the toojayzee?
The 250 bailed on me. CRACKED BLOCK REMEMBER?

Hmmmmmm...let's see...:thinking:I guess If I didnt have to cut the side of the block open, grind the sht out of the lifter galley openings to accommodate the canted valve pushrod angle. GLUE, and bolt a 1/4" wide plate along the side of the block to give support to the newly hogged out lifter galley. Fill the block to above the freeze plugs, then have it bored .186, then sleeved, bored, and finish honed to 3.700...............I may have just got myself another 250.

FAKE NEWS! I'm sure a can of Bar's Leak would have fixed the 250 right up and it would have been good for another 2,500 miles. Or 250. Appropriately named engine!

Plus, it would have been the 2nd time you did it. So you would have done it better and faster. (And stronger...where's Lee Majors?)

No ...the copper head gasket failed immediately.
*V1.
The Hylomar treated copper HG failed after that.
*V2..
*Composite HG from Cometic.
The engine started eating oil, and huffing within a minute of running, forcing me to reexamine the whole build, where I found the bad cylinder wall finish, and commensurate resleeve.
*V3.
Numerous attempts to control blowby after that....( V4,V5,.....)
Dead at V6.

The car has been basically “start able ” more or less for 2 weeks now. Despite the fact that I had a bad D585 coil the last attempt at starting it, I still had 8 other LS coils that I could’ve used to “temporarily“ get it running. After the non-stop, month long Marathon I took on to get it back together while I was furloughed last month, you’d think I’d be jones-ing to get the thing running so that I can reap the rewards for all of that work that started last fall.

Not so much.

Theres a wall down there. Getting it running now requires I do one of two things. I have to rely on someone else, or.....I attempt to self-teach the mountain of crap involved with getting the engine tuned well enough to start, idle, run, and perform all without washing down the cylinders, or melting the engine.

To know me brings no surprise that it frustrates the phck out of me when I can’t do something myself. The are very few things on this car where I have had to rely on the expertise of somebody else......MOF, I dont even need all five fingers on one hand to count them.
1. Paint. ( Original paint attempted by me, and commensurately failed, requiring the good graces of @Davedacarpainter. This time around, even the small job hood and trunk blackout, still proved to be beyond my skill set)
2. Engine machine work. No need to even try here.
3. Torque converter modification. I tried here again. All I succeeded In doing was making a potential centrifugal time bomb. The reality ck there was my concern for the length of my right leg. ( I preferred that it match my left).
4. The performance tune. I got the monster running and driving originally when it was batch fired, with the EDIS ignition. How the hell I stumbled into that is a mystery to me. ( it was a very simple tune, that’s why) However, Getting it running GOOD, again required the good graces of yet another, @a91what.
When I was deciding on the replacement engine, my greatest concern was the complexity of the engine itself. While it’s all warm and fuzzy to be able to say that I have an engine with COP/SEFI/VVTI controlled with an IAC, and an EBC, but in reality, I dont have a single clue about controlling any of it.

Had this been a variation of the simpleton-tune that I had in the monster, I’d be driving today..but as of this minute frustrated, and sitting on the couch.

It’s like I’m afraid to even try now. Why I have injectors as big as they are (95Lb/hr) is beyond me, considering those injectors are rated for 800 plus whp,...( a HP goal I’ve never even entertained) the 340lph pump can’t feed them At that power level, that’s for sure. But at the current state of tune, theres a whole buttload of potential fuel that can accidentally flood into that engine in an instant.
And i’m none to anxious to go down there and see if i can make that happen.

It still won’t run. all it’ll do is choke, and gag, cough and sputter at about 500 rpm. I took probably as much as 40 percent out of the fuel map, and modified the After start enrichment down significantly. despite that, the thing won’t run.

Piece
of
Sht.

Im gonna dumb it down. the COP will remain, but i’ll convert it to wasted spark. the injection will be batch fired. That’ll take the cam sensor out of the equation. I don’t know how any of that will affect the VVTI, but if it ends up where i can’t advance the cam, and it just stays straight up like a regular 2jz, then i’m good.

Fck technology.

Now that the rant is behind me however,...

I did solve the coil mount dilemma.
20200510_151411.jpg

The fix made the plate look like a fish bone.
20200510_150525.jpg

The diagonal slots allow me to run the connector cables under the new coils. Didn’t have to lengthen the wires, they are all too long now....I think they look great.
( too bad all it is is a photo op)
I put the seat in..
20200510_170208.jpg

This is so i have a place to sit when i make engine running noises.

Seems a little crazy you've come this far and are now scared to start it. But I know the feeling. Like I should know this and I've spent too much time/money to screw it up! Just film it, so we can all see. If I could find the tape and convert it to digital, I would show when we started the Regal up on Methanol the first time. After all the fires at the Indy 500 where they talk about it burns clear, we were scared :poo:less. We had THREE fire extinguishers around the car with the PINS PULLED! It started and ran with no fanfare. Until I stepped on the fire extinguisher when I was climbing out over the door bar and set it off. We had a camera on a tripod...I jumped and ran like the Boogie Man had me. My brother jumped like he was Michael Jordan dunking over Craig Ehlo. If we hadn't been so drunk, we might have hurt ourselves.

Maybe that is the key, Mike. Drink more, then start it up!
