My 1989 5.0 was in storage for 6 months. When I first pulled it out, it started right up. I took it for a spin around the block and all was fine. The next day I tried to start it and it started backfiring and was hard to keep running with out pumping the accelerator. Then finally it quit. Now when I crank it, at first it has that little sense that it might start, but then nothing from there. It did only have less than an eighth of a tank of gas, so I put a full tank of clean stuff on top of it. No help.
So far I've done this troubleshooting:
I thought it might be a clogged fuel filter and changed that...when I drained the filter it seemed like very clean fuel.
I checked electrical system and all seems well. I have a good spark getting to the plugs.
I got it running with starter fluid, but it died after the fluid burned.
When I turn the key to ON, I hear the fuel pump prime.
I hooked up a fuel pressure test gauge and it did not show any pressure when I cranked it... although I'm not sure if I hooked it up right??
I disconnected the fuel safety inertia switch and I get no priming sound... as expected.
When I depress the schrader valve on the fuel rail, there doesn't seem to be any pressure to relieve...just a dribble.
My question is, if I hear the fuel pump prime, what would stop the pressure from getting to the rail?
Would the fuel pump prime with a bad fuel pump relay?
I've searched the forums and I just can't find the right answer. Please Help!
