Got a 1998 GT with 4.6 and it spun a rod bearing, crank is shot and was wondering if it could be replaced with a 1998 mustang 3.8? We have a 3.8 ready to go but what changes will we have to make? Thanks

You'll have to make too many changes to make it worth while. Sell the V6 and get yourself another 4.6. Non PI 4.6's are a dime a dozen.

I have to agree with above. After everything is said and done, it will be cheaper to buy a salvage 4.6. There are wiring and PCM changes for starters.

Try car-part.com for sample $$ of salvage 4.6's.

Just take two of the rods out and run it as a 6 cylinder.

And going backwards with a GT is just bad form. You could probably sell the roller for enough money to buy a running and driving 98 V6 car.

I don't know about you guys....but I see this as an opportunity for a PI engine upgrade...not a 3.8L downgrade?!?

Might as well pick up an extra 35hp with the swap. It's going to cost you the same either way.

RWK, start looking around for an '01-up Crown Vic 4.6L PI engine, or better yet an '02-'06 Explorer engine (aluminum block). They're the same PI engine set up as the '99-'04 Mustang GT, but will be less likely to have had the hell driven out of them like a Mustang and because they're not associated with the word "Mustang" aren't likely to have the prices inflated by local wrecking yards as a result.

Good info on the PI motors Brian! I wouldn't have thought to look into crown vics and exploders!
