3.73 or 4.10

Well im a mostly highway driver and dont race that often but am still looking for a little more punch if you no what i mean. I drive a 06 gt with a CAI, JBA Axle back and custom tune. What do you guys suggest as far as gears. Are stock gears close to 3:73 therefore should i go with 4:10's or will 3:73's do just fine. I know this has probably been talked about so please dont get frustrated with this thread. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

3.73 is a great gear ratio! If it's mostly a street car with limited track use then I'ld recommend that.

Since you already have 3.55s go with 4.10s. I have 4.10s and I do a lot of hwy driving. I avg about 275 miles a week on the hwy and not once have I regreted getting 4.10s.

I have a 2005 with 4.10 currently with 5speed manual. I will be changing to 3.73 in the next 2 weeks. The 4.10 gives a good jump and is as fun as can be.......... but wheel spin can be a problem off a tight corner move and for driving around, 1st is real short and over 65-70 the RPM is a little high. If you plan to drag, go with the 4.10. If you want a good mix go with the 3.73. Just my 2 cents.

Sprited but not prone to spinning unintentionally. 3.73s are a good match for stock sized street tires. If your thing is doing burnouts or other hooligan type things with your stang, the 4.10s will be more satisfying.

Mustangs & Fast Fords did an article on top 10 mods you can buy for under $500. Here is what they said about gears: The Two-Valve crowd should go after lower gear sizes such as 3.90s and 4.10s. Justin Burcham of JPC Racing says, "These cars don't have a lot of torque, so they respond well to gears." He also says that with 3.90s or 4.10s, the rpm drop-off on gearshifts is not as severe, and that helps performance. Those enthusiasts with Three-Valve combinations found in '05-up Mustangs should run 4.10 gears, as unanimously selected by Gonyon, Burcham, and Mike Dezotell of Dez Racing. They said that for enthusiasts who don't want something as steep, the 3.90s are sufficient, but nothing numerically smaller works well to warrant the gear swap. The more hard-core drag racers out there should consider 4.30 gears.

Thanks for posting this. I think I'm gonna go 4.10s....I just don't know when I can. LOL

Does anyone have a dyno to prove that racer's statement? Every one that I have seen shows the 2 valve..well.. older 5.0 v8 having MORE low end. Or am I going too far back.

id go with 3.73s if i was to do it over, but im FI... you can always switch up your tire height to gain another .1-.3 in either direction. If u have no plans on goin FI, then the 410 will definitely provide a good pick up. imo...

The general feeling from any mustang site is 3.73 if you plan on going FI in the future, and 4.10 if you plan on staying naturally aspirated and not doing a ton of motor work. Pretty much, think about future mods you are going to do, and base your gear selection off that.

FWIW, my 05 manual GT(93 Race tune, C&L CAI, stock tires, 3.55's) can go WOT in any gear and at any speed w/o spinning the tires in the summer heat.
Spinnin' aint winnin'
