I bought a 89 vert. 2 years ago...and the 3G conversion had already been done. I just had to replace the alternator and noticed the top bolt was not mounted to the tensioner bracket. I put the new alternator in and there is no way I can get the top bolt to mount. It is off by 1/2 inch. Do I need to buy a new model tensioner to mount the alternator the right way?

The mounting for a 94-95 3G is a direct fit: you only have to use a longer bolt and a nut to make it work.

Edit: Mustang5L5 is right, you will need to grind or cut a small amount of metal off the stock mount to get enough clearance to make it fit correctly.

See http://www.mustangcentral.net/tech/alternator.html for the pictures on how much and where you have to trim the stock bracket to get it to fit correctly.

You might have to modify the alternator bracket slightly by removing some material where the casing contacts until the bolt hole lines up.

Or you can get a 6g alt which has a smaller case

Who ever did the conversion didn't finish the job. I suppose he figured the belt tension would keep it place which it does, but I'd go ahead and grind away that area on the bracket and put the bolt through. I actually took the whole bracket off, took it in my shop and put a bench grinder on the area that needs to be ground off. Took about 5 minutes.

Be advised, moving the alt in a little will change your belt's tension. Hopefully it won't mean getting a smaller belt.

Yeah ..the case is hitting the bracket. I guess I'll have to break out the drimel. What is the 6G Alternator from?

Thanks...

Yeah, a dull butter-knife can slice through that bracket.

6G's came on later mod motor vehicles.
