347 stroker

i have a quick question... i'm planing soon to get a 347 stroker kit and i would like to go with the DSS stroker kit.... and like everybody knows the mustangs are well known for their burning oil... i mean i know cars that go from the first time until you change the oil without adding any oil... now anybody has any idea if after ill put the kit in will still burn oil?

I would think it shouldnt since the kit comes with new rings and most of the time when you are burning oil its b/c of the rings. So i say no. Btw my friend just put in a 331 DSS stroker in his and it doesnt burn any.

I built a 347 assembly from DSS for my friend and it doesn't burn much oil at all. I had the block torque-plate honed, make sure the rings seat well and you should be good. His car is a '93 Cobra with iron Dart heads and Holley intake, it runs low 12's on Nittos.

The reason that "Some" 347's burn oil is becaust the rings run through the wrist pin opening on the side of the piston allowing oil to get around the rings. There are its made with the ring set higher so that the rings do not pass through this location and will burn no oil!

Probe makes those piston kits but I dont remember if you have to run the 5.315 rods to use those pistons. 347s burn oil because like he said, the rings intersect with the wrist pins. This allows oil to get passed the rings and into the chamber. If you lower the length of the rod, and raise the height of the piston, you allow for more room to keep the rings above the wrist pin. In case you dont know, 347's come with either 5.315 rods or the common 5.4 rods.

yep dss uses a 3.4 rod with a intersect wrist pin to the oil ring so there will be oil burning. chp has a shorter rod 3.25 so the wrist pin location is further down the piston therefore it doesn't intersect with the wrist pin and cause oil burnage. dss are made to be racing engines not daily driver, if u really want a dss get there 331 cause its won't burn oil.

what's wrong with the 347? i mean the price is the same.. plus i might put a supercharger sometimes , not sure yet... i plan to get afr 185's or performer rpm as heads, i belive a good street cam wil be the E303 and the 1.6 roller rockers, hmm what else?! yeah 30# injectors new fuel pump and i'm working right now on the suspension and some of the interrior... plus i have some ... and yeah the car it's a daily driver

nothings wrong with it, but the dss one isn't one you would use for longevity on street it is an oil burner. also if your planning on scing it make sure u build a low compression setup cause your cr will be too high for pump gas anymore after boost, thats what i built was a 8.5:1 cr for a boost setup i plan on running 10-12lbs of boost, but have yet to buy a sc.

These are the Probe SRS Pistons I use in my 347 with the 5.4 rod and as you see, they have no ring intersect issue.

yeah i see... are the dss pistons the same? should i go with the Probe SRS Pistons, or their stroker kit, i mena do they make one ? haha where did you get yours, website?

I don't think DSS use's Probe Pistons, but you might ask them if they can switch to them. When my SB was built back in October 03, These pistons were on back order. I had to wait 3 extra weeks for them. Seems FPS sells alot of these for their 331/347's. Probe reccomends a slight tighter clearence with these. Vince at FPS built mine and did a terrific job. He Stocks these as well as Ross & JE.

I really like these pistons and their design and had plenty of clearence with my .576" FTI cam. I know there are other's just a good & better, but for my application and what it's used for, these fit the bill nicely. Their flat tops with pretty darn deep reliefs and gave me 10.7 comp on my setup.

If you ask me DSS makes their own pistons and they are the best. Im pretty sure they have cured that oil problem too. I guess if you really want to solve the problem, just call them. Like I said probe started making those pistons and pretty much set a trend. DSS makes their prolite pistons and they are bad ass. Just call em.

i've talked to dss before, as far as piston design they don't have anything different, but they use a different oil ring package to control their oil problem. I also heard from a few people that they had problems with dss and clearances not measured right. I personally almost went with a dss setup but after hearing alot of complaints and seeing that I'd have an burning oil problems with a brand new engine I said its just not worth it.

My chp cost the same as a dss and i also had a main support girdle, low compression pistons for boost (8.5:1). for me it was the oil thing that turned me away from dss.
