What is the purpose of the valley pan under the intake manifold on the 351c engines? Does it have to be used or can it be deleted and just a gasket set used in it's place. Thanks.

To keep hot oil from splashing on the underside of the intake and heating it up.

I don't use one on my cleveland.

Actually it has another purpose on stock intakes ( and some aftermarket ones too) with the exhaust gas crossover passage, it keeps the oil from contacting the bottom side of the passage and burning the oil. If you block off these passages, you can also eliminate the pan, if need be.

I trimmed mine to keep the oil from splashing up but used real gaskets for the intake to the heads.
