4.6 non pi performance

can i put 2004 mustang cams in a non pi headed enging with no extra parts?
or am i better off getting an aftermarket cam like xe268h cams?

Yes, you can use the PI cams in your NPI 4.6. Some get gains of 20rwhp with those cams. Its better to do the PI intake at the same time for even more power.

Hmmm......I'm not sure how much you'd gain without swapping out your non pi intake for the pi version as the intake is the bottleneck holding you back. I'd guess maybe 5-8 rwhp with just the cams alone.

Go to TCCoA and moduler Depot, and check out JL's threads. You will learn alot about the NPI heads.

Who said anything about non-pi heads not being very good? Actually if you go check out the threads on MD you'll see that I am correct. People who already have intake and off-road mid pipes are reporting 10-15hp gains with PI cams alone, but you won't see that if the car in question still has stock exhaust.

i have a 4.6 truck, how woulld i go about making the mustang intake work on it? yes it has stock exhaust on it right now but i was thinking of using headers x pipe and some hooker maxflow's. is that cam a good choice or should i stick to 2004 mustang gt cam or somthing? do i have to change throttlebody for this cam? im new to the whole modular family and would like to learn more.

The truck is a whole different ball-game regarding the intake. I honestly can't help you with that one.

Regarding PI cams, I was one of the first to do the mod, my friend Johnny Langton was the first. JL saw a 12 RWHP gain when he swapped to PI cams. His car was a minor bolt on modified car with nothing really special about his exhaust( stock TBird manifolds, stock 2" cats, 2.25" compression bent tubing into an X-Pipe, flowing to 2 2.25" Dynomax Ultraflo mufflers ). I never dynoed my car when I put the PI cams in it, but you could tell that there was an improvement. I ran the stock TBird exhaust and stock NPI intake at the time.

For the bang for the buck, PI cams can be had brand new for $200.00 from Ford, it is really tough to beat it. If you like the Comp 268H is not a bad cam to go with, but it is more to buy.

Yes, You wil get similar gains to what JL saw. You may even see improved gas mileage, I did.

I saw a member on a local board selling some PI cams, though is it worth tearing it down just to do the cams? I see the numbers that you guys are quoting, however what would be a ballpark on the pi heads and cams together?

You can do it two ways. Pull the front timing cover and valve covers or you can just pull the valve covers. If you just pull the valve covers you have to be careful that the timing chains don't slip a tooth, it helps to have a cam retaining tool, you can get them from Anderson Motorsports or you can use a pair of vise grips. The easy but longer way is to actually pull the timing covers and the valve covers off, this requires you to take off most of you pulleys. Then it's just a matter of undoing the tensioners, pulling the sprockets off of the cams, unbolting the cam cradles, pulling out the old cams, putting in the new ones (use assembly lube) torqueing the cam cradles to spec and pattern, retiming the cams with the sprockets and main sprocket on the crank ( the chains and sprockets have timing marks but you can make your own if you wish before you take the sprockets off initially) these sprockets can only go on one way so once the timing chains are in the right spots you don't need to time the actual cams 99.9% of the time. Then just put the tensioners back on, reassemble the timing covers, put the pulleys back on and you should be good. Hopefully I didn't forget something here but it is quite easy, just time and making sure you time and torque everything properly.

Credit for the PI cam swap should all go to JL, he took so much crap over that swap it wasn't even funny. If it wasn't for him making that info public, people wouldn't know about it.

Credit for the PI intake swap has to go to JL and Kris Danner. They took on the World with that one too and proved everyone wrong. The could have kept it a secret and only a handful would know.
