I got a 351 windsor from an 89 LTD, I think that car had an AOD. anyway I heard that the 5 speed from the 4 banger will fit. I know it isn't as strong as a 5.0L 5 speed but it will do for the time being. I can get the entire setup including pedals for dirt cheap. Later on, I would get a stronger 5 speed which at that point would be an easier install since the car would be already manual. My mustang is a 4 banger 89 LX with automatic.

To put on a manual transmission, would I have to change the flywheel? Also where can I tell what balance I have? I assume the flywheel has to have the same weight as the balance?

I miss the clutch like no other and I would really love it if my 5.8L Mustang would be a 5 speed.

Anyway if the 4 banger 5 speed will hook up to the V8, I will go out and get the whole kit.

uhhmm, yea it might work for now, but it won't work for long. the torque rating on the 4 banger tranny is alot less I think. plus the input shaft is a different size if i remember correctly than the 5.0 t5. the gear ratio in the tranny is better in the 4 banger tranny though.

It will work you need to change the pilot bearing do accomidate for the smaller input shaft. I had one in my car and i really like the gearing my 3:08's got from it. somthing like a 3:73's first and 3:55's after that. Anyways stay away from powershifting and slicks and you should be ok unless your car puts out ungodly amounts of HP and Torque just my 2

i have one in my car blew it once, rebuilt it. it has a 4:1 first gear blew my mind the first time i drove it from an automatic. anyway youll need a bellhouding from a 5.0 mustang, pickup wont work very easily, and for the pilot bearing you need one with a 15mm inside diameter. And lastly for a flywheel, all 351 are 28 oz. flywheels. youll need to get the one with the smaller tooth count, 158 i think is what it is to fit the bellhousing

thanks for the details. I just remembered about someone that may be able to get me a 5 speed from a V8 Mustang. If that works out, I will only get the pedal assembly from the 4 banger Mustangs at the junk yard. How can I make sure my flywheel is a 28oz. Is it marked anywhere?

if you have both available you can tell by the size of the counterweight. 302's before 80 or 82 ( i dont remember) had 28 oz balance. the 50 oz'ers on the harmonic balancer the counter weight is almost 180 degrees around about 1/2 in thick and about 1 in. deep

forgot something else. dont use 80W/90, if you want more protection put limited slip additive in the atf it knocks the gl rating up a notch. gear lube gets slung around and sticks there in these trannys it dont flow well enough. im running about 350 hp on a 4 cylinder t-5 blew it out in about a weekafter i put it in. rebuilt it 2 years ago still working fine.

You won't blow up a damn thing. The torque rating isn't much lower than
the v8 tranny. the only differences are the input shaft size and the 1st,
2nd, 3rd, and overdrive gear ratios.

When I first converted my AOD to 5-speed, I too had a 5-speed from a 85 or 86 4-banger (which was free). The only problem I had was to find an input shaft bearing that would fit. I found that a Escort pilot bearing of the same year as the tranny worked just fine. I too loved the gear ratios. But since the tranny was abused before I got it, it didn't last too long, before I had to get a brand new T-5Z.

as stated the tranny will work with the appropriate pilot bearing. it may or may not last depending how you use it. i've had mine (4cyl t-5) in for about 2yrs now without a single complaint from it. it still shifts better than the stock t-5 when i got the car. the only thing i would change is the first gear though. it is way too short with my 3.73s and street rubber.

go for it

Thanks guys, the V8 T5 deal didn't work out. I am now looking into a complete 5.0 GT for dirt cheap with a screwed up body. But I am sure I can make it last as I am not that bad of a driver. I did have a F150 with a 5-speed and almost everyone on F150online.com had problems with them at the time. I used this truck off-road (real bad trails too) and drove on the streets with a heavy foot - never had a single problem.

I've had a 351 in a coupe with a 4cyl 5speed for two years now.
Simple facts.
Yes it will definately hold up.
Buy a good shifter, metal quadrant, and steel cable
if it wheel hops it breaks
(no offense)but if you can't drive it will break.

the pilot bearing you need is the one out an 87 saab 900s turbo. Autozone part number is 14675....(that might be wrong I'll double check the numbers today)

As said before, I went to a Ford dealership and paid a few bucks for the correct pilot bearing. Aske the parts person to get you a pilot bearing from a mid to late '80's escort and compare it to a V8 5-speed pilot bearing. They should be the same Outside diameter and thickness. If you can, carry the tranny out to the dealership with you.

Welp I got the transmission 5-speed from a 4 banger Mustang with the pedal assembly.

Now I need a bellhousing from a 5.0L (does it HAVE to be a Mustang?)

Where can I get a flywheel from? Do I need to buy a NEW one?

Also what clutch should I get? I am thinking of buying an OE clutch for now.

Is the crossmember different from AOD to T5? I need one from a V8 car anyway...

Will I need to make the hole in the shifter area bigger?

About the neutral and reverse switches? How can I make sure the car won't start in gear? Which wires do I need to change?

Thanks guys
