What year could this be from? Reverse is to the left and up! It's in a 65 Mustang with a Hurst shifter on it.

The Hurst shifter is what gives it that pattern, on most Ford 4 speeds. It is actually better, it makes it so you can't go from first to second and hit reverse.

are you sure the shifter linkage is correct?

I JUST finished my 3-speed to 4-speed swap like 30 minutes ago.. holy crap is it sweet to be done!

The 3-speed goes into reverse by pushing the shifter straight up and to the left. 1st gear is right below it (as shown in the previous pics), then pushing to the right and up is 2nd gear, and then back down and to the right is 3rd gear.

With the 4-speed if you have to push the shifter to the left until it clicks, then push up to get into reverse - it's a Hurst. To double check, push it into reverse then try to shift straight down from that position. You shouldn't be able to.... If there's a gear immediately below reverse then it's a 3-speed.

The Hurst pattern with the Toploader 4 speed for reverse is over to the left and up. The stock Ford shifter pattern was over to the left and down like mr-fixit said. The Toploader with Hurst shifter in my 89 Ranger slides effortlessly into reverse without any fumbling, clicks or tricks. It IS possible to hang the shifter between first and reverse though even with a Hurst shifter.

I agree - my Toploader came from '66 stang and it has Hurst shifter, left and up for reverse. It has hung up between 1st and reverse a couple of times - I had to re-adjust the linkage. I had to lubricate the shifter with lots of WD-40 and lithnum grease. I haven't had any problems since then.

Same news here!! Works fine for me right now but I have a feeling that there will be a T5 in the near future.

Over the years , I've found that the reason for hanging it between 1st and rev. is sliding the shifter partway into rev, then into 1st. Usually requires taking the shift rods loose to correct. Lots of fun in the dark on the side of the road. But if you can do it by feel without light, this qualifies you as a Toploader expert in my book I haven't done this in years, but my 16 year old son did it a couple years back. He didn't believe it was possible till it happened to him Practice makes perfect

I have had mine hang up too, learned just the right way to pull the shifter to get it unstuck! (first few times I did have to disconnect the rods)

It is a 4-Speed because I can go into 1,2,3,4 grear with ease. It's just a pain, some times to get it to go into reverse gear! It does click then goes in gear. And it is all the way to the left and up! Thanks-Joe

I guess I have always used Hurst shifters. Never thought much of it... I had no idea there was any other pattern for reverse than left-up.
I learn something everyday.

All Hurst did to get reverse in the left up position, is flip over the reverse shifter lever on the transmission. This changes the pattern from the Ford reverse down.
