65 Courtesy Lights.

I'm still working the installation of my 65 Coupe Painless wiring harness. I've got no under dash courtesy lights on the car but would like to add these. I can buy the courtesy light brackets, see attached photo, but can't seem to locate the bulb holders. Can anyone point me to an available part for these or explain what I need to do. Thanks guys.

Used. Or go through the electrical socket catalog at the local parts store. Let us know if you find one that fits.

I ordered DCS-464 Double Contact Sockets from Hot Rod Wires, $7.00 a piece plus shipping and handling. They are made by Pico and fit the opening in the stock courtesy lamp brackets, .75 inch dia. The sockets have two pigtails. The originals had one. I'll loop one of the pigtails back and ground it, should work out ok.

Does anyone have a photo of a stock courtesy lamp mounting for a 65 Coupe. Mine were missing when I bought the car.

Some photos of installation locations would be appreciated too.

A typical two pigtail socket/bulb uses two filiments which share the ground with the metal base. You will need to use a two filiment bulb, such as a brake light bulb. If you use the single filament courtesy lamp, It's posible the one solder blob in the middle of the bulb base will contact both contacts and if you have the one pigtail grounded it will short out and blow the fuse.

You could use the taillamp filament side of the socket and cut/remove the other brake lamp side pigtail. The brake lamp would be draw a lot of current, but worse, get so hot, someone would get burned.

Here is a figure to help determine each filament.

Why screw around with that ? You can buy single contact pigtails for cheap.

Look under the dash, should be some holes for sheet metal screws. One on the right I think centered on the dor for the heater box, and one on the left to the right of the parking brake handle. If you have to drill a hole, make sure you don't drill into any wires,

you could always do what i did when i rewired, it's not stock of course, but it looks pretty cool. i took some red neon tubes and put two under the front dash, driver and passenger side, and one under each seat in the back and wired up to the door switches. you cant see them and lights up the interior quite nicely.

Thanks guys, I bought some 1034 bulbs last night that I'm going to wire up to my double contact sockets. I'll only be using one filament of the bulb. I'll do some trial and error testing out of the car.......hopefully tonight.

Thanks for the info on the courtesy lamp locations. With the painless wiring harness I have four lights available. One at each end of the dash and two for some kind of center console which I don't have. I may wire in all four and Drill some new holes under the dash. We'll see how much light these 1034's give out.

I was hoping to see a photo of how the brackets mount. I'm assuming that the lamp bolts to the underside of the dash on the exterior and not on the interior. Again a photo would be great.

Yes, exterior, "under" the dash literally. just run a sheet metal screw up into the dash from underneth. That was the factory install. Nothing fancy or special. THe bracket grounds to the dash. Like i said, don't run the screw through any wires.

My solution. My car (65 Coupe) had no courtesy lights when I bought it. I'm rewiring it with a Painless harness and wanted a 'kinda' stock solution. I bought replacement courtesy lamp brackets from NPD, and DCS-464 Double Contact Sockets from Hot Rod Wires, $7.00 a piece plus shipping and handling. They are made by Pico and fit the opening in the stock courtesy lamp brackets, .75 inch dia. The sockets have two contacts for a range of dual filament bulbs and ground through the bulb body. I opted for 1034 bulbs from Checkers. I cut the power wire to the brighter filament short and insulated it. I opted to connect the less powerful filament to the single wire of the Painless harness. As I say they ground though the bracket screwed to the dash.

THat looks pretty good. Can you post a picture when you get them powered up? Would like to see what the brightness level is on the dim filiment. THe double contact socket seems like it does the job. Pictures look great!

Did the early Mustangs, 65, 66 have courtesy lamps in the trunk? My Painless wire harness has a wire for trunk courtesy lamps but I don't know if they were stock.

Not that I know of but since you have have the wire...might as well pu one in. We are working on a 64 Galaxie in the shop that has these little plastic micro mecury switches for the under hood light and the trunk light. Not sure where he got them, but they work great. Something to look for.

The 64-66 courtesy lamp was directly below the ignition switch and the glove box door emblem. You can get the special bulbs, brackets, sockets, and correct fasteners from Glazier's.
