Progress Thread 67coupe’s 89 LX - Dyno Vid

Racked up over 120 miles today and got three checkpoint stamps. Still 12 miles from the house. Hanging out in Pass Christian listening to some live music. Events like this are what make this trip worth it.

Downtown is closed off to all but registered cruisers. Got to be 100 cars and 1000 people here.

Finally had a chance to update this thread. We all made it back with no issues. Total mileage for the 3 days on the coast was 370. Over 120 miles each day. Add the heat and traffic and it can be pretty grueling at times. The fuel pump didn’t give any more problems after moving it away from the muffler.

This was my second year at Cruisin the Coast and every year we learn when and where the best cruise spots are. Clearly, Bay St. Louis (most western stop) is the place to be on Saturday.

There’s a long frontage road right on the bay where cars are parked. That then opens up to a downtown area 3 or 4 blocks in size where more cars are parked. Add in the restaurants, live bands, bars and college football game day make this place electric. This is by far the most popular stop on the cruise.

One of the better Eleanor’s I’ve seen. Really like the blue paint. Kenne Bell’d Coyote. Probably makes some silly power.

Speaking of cars. You’ll see everything from junkers, rat rods, patina cars with modern drive trains, beautiful restorations to wild high dollar high horse power builds. It’s really a mix of everything. I’m definitely planning of on going next year. I think we’ll try to drive down on Tues so we can go to the auto cross on Wed.

Time to finish the room so I can finally paint the 89!

Something I forgot to to mention about the 5.0 I installed (out of the 89). It has burned a significant amount of oil ever since I installed the AFR heads (back in 2006). I chalked it up to either having a tired short block or having an earlier version of the heads which had known valve guide issues.

I can say after using the engine in the 67 for the week, it burned virtually no oil. Not a hint of smoke out the exhaust. It actually runs really good for a 200K short block with 100K AFRs. That got me thinking why would it use so much oil in the 89, but not any in the 67. Then it hit me, in order to not run an intake spacer and have potential hood clearance issues, I removed the valve cover baffles and ground the inside of the covers down to clear the stud mount roller rockers. When installing this engine into the 89, I bought a set of tall valve covers. I now know this was clearly the cause of all the oil consumption I saw when it was in the 89.

Just a lesson to those who may be tempted to remove the v/c baffles for roller rocker clearance.

Hit some major milestones on the room. Crown molding is up. All the trim has been caulked and touched up.

Had to resize the hvac registers to clear the crown molding. Made a frame out of 1/4” plywood to cover and seal the duct.

It’s vinyl plank. Snaps together. Went down pretty quick.

Bonus photo of my crazy cat trying to help. I was on one ladder and he jumped on the other. He’s a character.

Only a few things left. Have to run wire for the rear surround speakers. Then move the cable outlet. Then base board and I can finally move the furniture back in!

The room is done! At least enough to move the furniture in. I have a garage bay back again!

Installed new ceiling fans

Finally started on the 89. Removed all trim (window, cowl, locks, door handles, tail lights).

Hoping to shoot these in trim black tomorrow night.

Then remove cobra kit pieces and try to have them in primer by the weekend.

Also, made a major purchase on Black Friday. Will show it off once it’s delivered.

Had some issues on the cowl and door handles. Had a few odd spots show up on the first coat. I tried to cover them with additional coats but they still showed through. All the other parts came out great.

Don’t really know what happened. I think it’s just the nature of trim black. I’ll have to scuff those and spray them again.

Front and rear bumpers and cobra kit are removed.

I’ve already done some prep to these. So fixing the few leftover problem spots and getting them in primer tomorrow shouldnt be a problem.

I’ve been talking to the local paint store about using a higher quality paint (Cromax). It’s alot more then what I’ve been used to (Nason). But, apparently, I have an expensive color (Cabernet red). Any thoughts as to if higher quality paint is worth the investment?

I’ve read the colors are deeper and more vibrant and the paint is more durable against scratches and rock chips?

Haven’t updated my progress in a while. Was busy over the holidays. Finally making progress after a time consuming mistake.

Went to spray primer on the cobra kit and made what I’ve read is a common mistake. 1st coat went on great. Had some trouble with the 2nd coat. It just wasn’t spraying right. Adjusted the gun, no change. Went to mix another cup and immediately realized what happened. No hardener in the previous cup. The only piece that didn’t get sprayed without hardener was the front bumper. I went ahead finished that but didn’t put any addition coats on the other pieces.

Reached out to stangnets resident paint expert @Davedacarpainter. He confirmed my fear, the coat with out hardener needs to come off. After talking with Dave, I decided to let them dry and sand the offending coat off vice trying to wipe it while wet.

It actually wasn’t that bad sanding all those parts: side skirts, rear bumper and spoiler. There’s an obvious tell when sanding primer missing the hardener.

It balls up into clumps on the paper. With that I was able to finish the cobra side skirts.

Then turned my attention to the hood and fenders and the rear bumper that still needed some more work.

Filled the antenna holes on the pass side fender. Prepped everything and shot some more primer.

All prieces are now in primer. Then finished stripping the body. Removed the door molding and quarter windows. Will prep it for primer this week.

Thinking about trying to save these. I am worrried that they might be too far gone. They’re worn so much that they’re really thin in areas.

I’m also thinking about a color change. I painted a Jeep grill for a coworker and really like the color. Just not excited about dropping the k member, stripping the engine bay, and painting every jam on the car.

Thoughts? Pictures don’t do it justice. Has almost a maroon tint in low light then a deep red in sunlight. Very fine metallic.

I vote for a color change.... but since i bought this, I’m now partial to metallic reds!

I’ll just add that my color, which from the pics looks similar, looks so so in the garage.
But when I clean it up, and it’s shining in the sun, it shows it’s true “colors”. And it’s proabably a 15 year old paint job. I would imagine brand new would pop even more!
