This is about my buddies car, sorry its not mustang tech but I dont hang out in GM forums at least.

This is an 86 Monte, its a nice ride. He has a new tree-fity, to replace the 305 with. Its a complete crate engine, 350hp/350ft lbs. In know the ford 7.5 wont take that kind of power, common sense tells me the chebby wont handle that for long either. He plans to see the strip a couple of times, but its a street cruiser really.

better to be safe than sorry. Chevys are rated by bolts rather than 7.5. How many bolts hold the back cover on?

he has a 7.5 10 bolt.it's the same rear under my brothers 80 malibu.his car runs 8.40s so far and has survived 4 dragstrip seasons so far.it's also the same size rear under new camaros with an axle upgrade.it will last along time behind an a/t with a mild converter.a guy at the strip has ran 6.90s so far in a newer camaro and it hasn't bit the dust yet.

well if its the same as your brothers, malibu which runs 8.40's!!!!, lol, I'm sure its safe to say it will handle a street cruiser. The chevy 10 bolts are good rear ends and take quite a beating.

8.40's maby in the 1/8th and it won't survive too much of that. There are two 10 bolts, one with the 7.5" ring gear, one with the 8.5" ring gear. The 8.5 isn't bad and only came on a few cars such as the late 60's camaro's. The 7.5 10 bolt which comes on the newer GM's can't take much. Two of my buddies put 12 bolts in their cars because they kept snapping 10 bolts.

you should be asking how weak it is. i got a friend with an 85 ss monte carlo with a 350 with just the simple carb, intake and exhaust upgrades. it has a th350 tranny with a 2400 stall and that 3.73 equipped 7.5 rear. well he is on the 3rd engine, 5th tranny,4th rear.he has had the car for a little over a year. he does not race at tracks. but he is a dumb teen. he likes to do burnouts and donuts a lot. so does that answer the question.

there is 3 10 bolts guys early 10bolt used in early 60's, late 10 bolt used from 67-up, and corporate 10 bolt that was used in s-10 pickups. the corporate 10 bolt is the strongest my dad pulled 1.6' 60 footers on 12.5 wide slicks with 1

if you know how to use the car and don't do stupid stuff it will survive.the car does 1.80 60fts on slicks and hasn't broke yet.by the way there are actually 4 ten bolts.the 7 1/2,7 5/8,8.2, and 8.5.the gm 12 bolt is the almost identical twin to an 8.8 ford.the key to making any rear last is to keep the slack out of the drivetrain when you launch and not do stupid stuff like dumping the clutch or neutral dropping them into gear.
