How do I remove this without wrecking the handle.

Push the button in like you're putting in in gear, and pull the handle off.

if all else fails, search for a thread under roughly the same name, started by Mansonozz a month or two ago. they can be hard to slide off.

sometimes you can't, my mechanic had to break mine off. haha

some cars have a staple lookin retainer on the handle. the staple slides out and the handle comes off. i had the impression that stangs dont, but it is worth lookin for.
good luck.

Your right, forgot about that.. My 97 T-bird is like that. But don't think the stangs are.

Push the button in and pull the handle straight up hard.

Be carefull as there is a spring inside that will pop loose.
