I emailed the seller and they said the price is $26900. what I want to know- is it worth it

I have no idea what it is worth but that brings back some serious memories of when I was 18 (in 1988) and I bought my first Mustang, a used 1988 Mustang GT 5.0 in white with 12,000 miles.......

I had just gotten my first job in telecom and thought I was the **** rollin in my bad GT, putting down a mad 225HP and oh, the Saleens, they were the real deal, my unicorn...... and it only took me 18 years and a couple more Mustangs later to finally get one at age 35.....

I also spoke to this dealer and he had asked me what I thought it was worth since he didn't know Saleens. After talking to Mark at Performance Autosport, he told me between $14K-$16K was about right. If they really want $26,900 they are smoking something. But, you never know, someone may be willing to pay it. But beware because these cars can have electrical problems with the Monroe shock system I'm also told. The white wheels are the correct DP5 wheels. The car is on open MSO so there won't be any issues trying to title it. Hope this helps.

Well, it's already past the 14-16k.
I think those numbers are way low. I've seen a mint condition foxbody gt with superlow miles sell for 14,000. And a mint notchback with 1,000 miles sell for $18,000.

This car is ten times nicer and a million times more rare.

I think we had a similar car linked from ebay to this forum last year, and the price went up to something like 24,000. Not far from 26,000.

I'm no saleen expert, but from a foxbody standpoint, the car is worth $20,000 easy, perfect foxes are hard to come by.

For a seller who wants top dollar, IMHO the drivers seat show a load of wear for a 5k mile car. My '89 leather seats looked like that after 105,000 miles...

I have had several cars with leather seats, and none of them looked like that before 50k miles, even those with that many years on the clock.

Yea,

The problem is with that grey leather FloFit used, it dried out pretty quick. A perfect seat can look like that even after getting in and out of it a few dozen times because it's so dry. I have only seen it on the SSC's. IF the mileage can be verified, this car is easily worth 20-23k. Easy.

My SSC had 7,000 miles on it when I got rid of it and the drivers seat looked the same! I think getting in and out and pushing against that side of the seat makes them wear like that! Bad design for that type leather! Also the gray did wear more then the rest of the seat! It was # 142! ( The guy that got mine ran it under a semi in the rain! Someone was suppose to have rebuilt it! The top as smashed back to the roll cage! ) Mark

Saleen has been known from time to time to skip bumper numbers to give the allusion that more units have been produced then what has actually been made....

Also remember that no #6 car will ever be produced.....

Futher more, back in the old days when cars were special ordered from a dealership, a bumper number was assigned to that vehicle. However, if the order was cancelled, the sequence of numbers was continued but that number/car was never made.....The real truth may never be figured out.

What's even better. The SSC that is number #1 that Liz and Steve still own to this day was actually the last one built. Car number #2 which Mark at PAS owned for the pasted few years was actually the press car and wore the #1 bumper number through all the press related events and was later re-numbered #2 has the model year moved to 1990. There's some usless Saleen information for you that you may or may not have known

Right.

Actually, 186 is highest bumper number for the SSC's. They skipped random #'s after car 144. Actually, other than Mark's #2 and Steve's #1 there are no 3-9 cars either.

......and how do we know all of this??????? When you've been around Saleen for so damn long, you retain all this information you know is worthless to the common mustang world but comes in handy for these types of situations.....

I guess you can call us geeks of the Saleen automotive world....Instead of pocket protectors and glasses, we stockpile Saleen parts and retain useless Saleen information

I knew that waould get a resonse out of you Scott!! Don't worry, that statement was aimed at ALL us dinosaurs that have been around Saleen longer then 99% of there employee's have If it wasn't for us, all the useless facts would have been long since forgotten.....

Remember, no one at Saleen even knows what an S351 is, let alone know how to work on one. While I was looking at the Saleen F150 "S331" truck at the auto show, the sales rep asked if I was "familiar" with Saleen since I was wearing a Saleen Hat. I mentioned I owned a few, one being an S351 and he had no clue what that was??? "You mean an S281? Right?" he said. I think before anyone begins working for Saleen, especially in sales, they should be given a week long training seminar on the history of Saleen so they don't sound like jacka** when they are talking about or trying to sell/market the vehicles!! Anyone agree with me or am I way out of line???

very cleaning looking car, maybe a few thousand high in price. I agree with Marcus, who has "some" experience in buying an SSC, 20k-23k range

To the employee not knowing what a S351 is! That is a symptom of what is wrong with Saleen. Huge production numbers, big money $$$, and production employees that couldn't care less about the cars! That is why the earlier Fox body cars are so special, it seems like they were built by car guys, who had a true love for what they were doing.

At the very least, The Saleen Book should be required reading, pre-hire, much like an employee handbook etc.

It always brings up the Barrett Jackson auction question too me. I was there 2 yrs ago, and they had an SSC priced at $24,500 in their showroom. I knew this was totally out of the range beings it had over 50k and the DP5's had 2 wheels with cracks in them. I told the dealer he was smoking something but he insistanted the owner of the car was the largest private Saleen collect on the West Coast. He wanted to show me the Saleens the owner has or had at one time. All this was BS to me, but 3 wks later, the car ran through the auction and brought almost the asking price, so it does appear that even though we on this form agree on pricing for the most part, there are fools that continue to "up" the market for us...which over time will benefit alot of us that have held on to them.

I was going to let Robert answer. Anyway, back in the day late 1985 Steve was taking orders for cars and he had someone cancel an order on him early. When you are only building a few dozen cars for the year it hurt. As Bobby said, they start numbering cars and then some numbers are left out here and there well supposedly that order that was cancelled was going to be bumper number #06 so when they got to the next year and wondered where #6 was for the year before someone said, 'hey that was the car that the order got cancelled and Steve said from now on we skip that number. Of course I was not there but I believe that is pretty close to what really happened.
