Sorry, I can't figure out where the search function is, I'm new to this site today. I just aquired a 1992 5.0 GT H.O. automatic mustang. The starter is mounted with only 2 bolts. I CAN'T get the top one out to save my butt. I have tried every possible angle, extension, swivels, etc.. and am at a standstill. I feel like such a loser because I cant even get this starter out lol. Also, I have 2 wires coming off the starter= a large one and a small one, both are on the same post of the starter relay on the inner fender, and it starts. Is this correct? I cant see where these 2 wires connect to the starter solenoid as I cannot get the starter to come out. Sorry for the multiple questions, I am clearly frustrated. Looking forward to digging into this forum. Thanx in advance.

Welcome!
The search function is near the top of the page, User Cp, FAQ, search, logout.
I've always used a couple of extensions to get the top bolt. Maybe the wiring diagrams below will help. I'm sure someone here knows the wires right off the top of their head. There are some very good people here.

yeah everybody keeps telling me that; to use one 6" extension, or two 3". My dad (long time mustang man) told me the same thing. But there is NO room to ratchet it back and forth no matter which way I come at it from. I am fed up and ready to take off the damn header so I can just get at it from the top, but I am afraid I will snap a header bolt off and be F'd.

have you tried putting a universal joint at the end of your extension(s)?

yeah, earlier today I bought a ratchet with a super short handle, and a ratcheting head, and also a 360 degree swiveling nuckle extension. Still nothing. What about if I took out the lower motor mount bolts, and jacked the engine up 2 inches or so to get clearance?

I have a set of long headers I want to throw on, may as well do that now while I am messing with the starter too huh.

You just have to find the right combination of extensions and universals to get the ratchet handle in a place where you can turn it. It's been a long time since I changed my starter, but I recall having at least 12" worth of extensions, and still being able to turn the ratchet only one click at a time.

When I did the starter on my 93 I had several extentions so that I could snake them past the motor mount. the ratchet was infront of the motor mount so I had at LEAST 12" of extenstion possibly more. Kinda sucks

I have a set of BBK LTs on my 88 and I can now get to the top bolt fromt he top side of the car. Much easier but I had to pull the starter to get the headers in. It is much easier with the starter out to put the LTs in
