96 to 98

I've been seriously thinking about selling my 97 gt to get a 96 to 98 cobra. But i'm wondering would it be seriously worth it to get another vehicle i don't know much about like the one I have now. So is it more expensive to maintain a cobra compared to a gt? Tell me the pros and cons to owning a cobra and should I get one or just keep my gt?

I owned a 96 mystic cobra & a 96gt with a 2001gt engine. The 2v engines are easier to work on. The cobra will outrun the GT but I perfer the 2V.

I also prefer the 2V car, simpler less mechanically complex cheaper.

Go to any auto parts store as soon as you say the word Cobra a glazed deer in the headlights look... They cannot even tell you what plugs much less more significant parts. Just one example of the pain and expense of owning a 4V.

I bought my first mod motor car last summer. I've always wanted a cobra an picked up one I thought was a good deal. I had to fix a few little things but really enjoy the car. NOW I wish I read more on these cars. I wanted a car to beat on an drive the crap out of. Now in some ways I wish I picked up either a 99 + 2v or a 96 to 98 2v an built a aluminum block stroker with trick flow heads. But at least at the cruise ins my cobra stands out.

I would go with a newer model Cobra. '01 haad the updated intake and IRS.

Parts are more. It is scary to look under the hood and there is no room compared to the 2V.

I flogged the crap out of my 98 GT to the bitter end and never worried. Now I worry all of the time because if the engine goes it will cost sooooo much more to replace than the 2v.

^ yea there a $$$ pit sometime's if you don't treat them right but really all mustang or any sports car is in the end > every gt I pass and bark the pipe's at turn's green with envy everytime and a cobra always turn's heads at the race track > I love my 98 cobra and have just ordered a alum RAM flywheel and clutch set up for it my 3" cobra R cowl hood was shipped today and I can't wait till it come's in ! I'd say if you want it buy it and you at least fulfill the desire to own one even if you change your mind later and sell it for a lesser 2v car > Irs car suck (99-04) but the 03-04 are monster power house's> and yes 96-98 do responed very well to boost> but stay under 5oo hp or you'll find oout just how much money a 32v motor will cost you > this is just my .02

I to say this to all the na-sayer's who love there 2v's > but with next year 5.0 302 32v motor coming to the 2011 mustang gt and it is going to be a 32v motor and I see 32v stuff becoming the way of the future for mustangs get ready it's going to be a bumpy ride > hopefully in a good way

I just purchased my 96 Cobra last September, and I really have mixed emotions about it. I have had many Mustangs before (mostly fox bodies), and yes, the Cobra does get way more attention. However, like another poster mentioned above, I am absolutely terrified of blowing up the engine in this car. I can rebuild it myself, but just parts and machining costs are tremendous in rebuilding a 4V engine. Also, they really are not fast cars. Even with the 4.10s in it, it doesnt stand a chance against any LS engined car, much less any of my Buicks. So, unless you "have to have" a Cobra, I would just get a 2V, throw some gears and a blower on it with the money you save off the "sticker", and call it a day. Hope this helps your decision.

I'd say go for it. The power difference should be pretty big from a non-pi swapped GT. But, since you're considering a 98 are you sure you don't want to go the extra step into the "New-Edge" styled Mustangs? The 98 Cobras have 305hp and the 99s have 320hp. Just make sure you check for "the fix" when considering 99s. They all had Teksid blocks until 01 which used the slightly lighter but weaker block. But if you wanna boost make sure you don't go past 10#s on the stock rods (I wouldn't go past 8). I believe the 96-98s used the T-45 as I know the 99s did. Really it all comes down to what you want and how much power. You can mod you GT to outrun a stock Cobra but Cobras can be modded too.

What ???? ^ stock yes> modified > I beg to differ> Turbo a cobra and cut it's weight down to a G-N and then you got a race.
you can put long tube headers a cold air intake , gears , and a shifter and get in to the 12's in the 1/4 mile > with Nitrous or a super charger watch out .
2v's are good cars no doubt but add the same mods to a 2v and a 4v exhaust ,intake , chip or programmer and a 4v with a ok driver will stomp a mud hole in a 2v in it's sleep > I say find a cobra and take it for a test drive and then come back and tell use your .02 > I bet you I'm right and you'll be smiling

No it's not more expensive. Aftermarket bolt ons such as pullies, L/T's, mid pipes, catbacks, gears, CAI's are gonna be similar to the GT. Things that will get more expensive will be things like fancy valve covers, calipers/rotors if you have to replace them, throttle bodies (which don't add HP, so save your money) cam kits ect...

IMO, it's worth getting a 305HP stock motor car versus a 215HP stock motor car.
