I haven't spun tires for the longest time. I've had the viper for two months now, and never once spun the wheels besides over-accelerating and losing my tail in first gear. No "intentional" standing burnouts.

I know this is a little off topic, but how does the tq in the Viper feel when compared to the stang?

just tried and managed a chirp the first, and nothing on a slight incline. I have no reason to try while turning the wheel, a camry can do that. I also didnt try a brake stand, cause even w/ my 97 6 cyl monte, I could spin, even on brand new rubber. I know its due for a tuneup. badly. could that be it?

The tires on a Monte Carlo aren't usually as wide as those on the GT. Also the GT has limited slip differential so you have to spin both tire whereas the Monte Carlo only has to break one loose. If you have 2.73 gears or live in a high altitude area then it will be considerably harder to spin the tires with a 96 (especially the auto). Start installing performance mods and you'll be frying the tires at will, but you will be paying for it too. Our tires are not particularly cheap...

an auto 97 GT will not chirp 2nd no matter what. I never got mine to do it. Even after an o/r h pipe and flowmasters. Get a transgo shift kit and 4.10's and you'll be laying solid rubber when you hit 2nd. Do a head swap and you'll be chirping 3rd. Hell, mine'll chirp 3rd and i've still got the stock heads.

I have a 97 auto GT vert.

It barks the tires hard (almost brand new Dunlop SP5000s) and steps to the side. It has a Transgo, but still with the stock gears It also spins them from a dead stop, not much but a little. If I powerbrake it can light 'em up if you stay on the gas.

My only mods are: transgo, densecharger, chip

It is like the 95 GTS mustangs. Basically, I have a v6 with v8 running gear. v6 seats, manual windows and locks, no foglights, etc. It is lighter than most GTs but it is still a non-pi mod motor.

I have the same problem, but I live at 4400 feet If I go really slow in first gear and then punch it I usually get a little chirp, and that is with all those mods. I am getting heads and I can't wait to step on it and just let it go. It will be awesome.

the tranny has the occasional shudder during slow accel, but when I punch it it shifts real tight. the rear end is a little sloppy, but nothing that should make a diff. Im gonna go and try right now again.

It sounds to me like you have drivetrain issues. Probably the torque converter and driveshaft. I say this because the torque converter is what leads to most shuddering during acceleration as the car attempts to go into D and O/D. The rear end sloppy shifts sounds like the driveshaft or a burned out differentail.

Do this. Go to your car, pop the hood and check the transmission fluid. Make sure its full and that the fluid is still red. If its brown or brownish black, then it needs changed ASAP. Mercon V is what is to be used in the transmission. I recommend adding some Lucas transmission slip additive to keep the transmission from slipping any further. If there is metal gritt in the fluid when you check it, then your transmission is probably shot. Expect to rebuild the transmission if this is the case.

Next time you floor it, floor it from a stop with the brakes held in. When the tires start spinning, if one tires spings a good amount more than the other, then I think your rear differential is shot.

I also noted you asked if your car has traction control. If it does, there should be a button somewhere on or near your console that controls the traction control device. My advice is get out the owners manual if you have one and look up traction control in the manual. If it doesnt give you any info, or if you cant find the button where it says it should be, then you dont have traction control.

Anyways, let us know how the transmission goes and if you have any questioins feel free to ask.

AHAHAHAHAHA!! Dark Knight, that line at the top of your sig is priceless!!! HAAHA. I used to be the same until I met my GF's parents when it dawned on me that if anything happend to my car, daddy could pull a brand new one out of his wallet. She only drives my car when I'm incapable but anyways, now I'm like "GET ON IT BABY!!! WOO WOO"

Glad you like it . I cant help but get worried when my gf drives the car. She'll beg until I give in then its ding and sharp turn city. I swear. She drives likes shes in a huge truck or something whenever she goes over speed bumps. I can hear my exhuast go " ding ". Im setting here going . When she turns, she makes theese really wide turns not realizing my car turns quick and ends up nearly hitting the curb on the side of the road. All of this is why I say she makes my butthole pucker!!!!!!!!

If you have good tires, it will be hard to spin the tires on a stock stang.

My '88 AOD used to spin up 1st gear from a stop and chirp the 1-2 shift all the time. Then i slapped on some sticky 245's and all that stopped. From a dead stop i can punch it and get a squeak and that's it. Like someone said before, it's not necessarily a bad thing. Sure it disappoints some who want to see me spin the tires. I nail it and just take off with no wheelspin. But then when it comes down to racing, i just hit it with no worries. The car has power too. It's trapping 100+ MPH inthe 1/4

Hell, I could chirp the tires in my old 93' LX Hatchback.....and it was a 4-banger with like 100hp-110hp.

I wouldn't worry about it too much,

I rented a new (1200miles on the dial) 2003 GT Vert with an auto last summer & with the traction control off it would not burn the tires up from a stop. I had to Break Torque it to get any significiant rubber burning action.

Not Running On All Eight Cylinders?

Hey! You think there's any chance the previous owner(s) drove the #### out of the car and sold it because it would no longer burn rubber? I mean heck, it is a possibility that they have dogged the car until it is only hitting on six or seven cylinders. Maybe a compression check might explain some things!

That's a real possiblity....but 215hp & 280tq in a heavy Vert with an auto is not going to burn the $hit out of the tires whenever good traction is avalable.

BTW: Traction not HP is the biggest factor at work.

Something is wrong.

a) The car might not be running right.
b) No offense, but what technique are you using as far as driving goes?
c) Maybe somebody has put a higher gear in your car?

I've got a Stock 97 GT coupe with 5spd, and I can spin through first AND second, and even bark third. I've even spun halfway through third gear at the dragstrip one night (I launched from 3k and dumped the clutch and quick-shifted, ran a 12.3 in the 1/8th, LMAO!) If nothing else, power brake the thing. I can simply melt the tires off while powerbraking, you should be able to as well.

Big difference between spinning tires with a manual & a slush box. Especially at that power level, when you can shock the tires with a m5 to break them free.

I think it depends a lot on the road you are trying to do it on. On most roads I cant really spin em unless I dump at like 2000 rpm, then it'll spin all day long. There was road near my old apartment that I could be rolling like 30mph in first and stomp on it and break em loose, but that was because of the road. Also, for some reason, my car seems to really like to spin them at the track. I thought traction at the track would be better, but so far it has been worse. Under most circumstances my car just doesnt want to spin, chirp a little, yes, spin,no. Car gets a lot of rubber in second, sometimes. I can chirp third on very rare occasions, but not with any regularity.
