A few questions about 96-98 gts

Whats up Stangnet? I am thinking about getting a 96 4.6 gt. I already have a 94 gt,but I am growing tired of having transmission problems. If i get a new tranny this will make the 3rd one although i only had to pay for one under warranty. From what i can rememeber, 96 and up gt's didn't have many trans problems. Is this true? I could just buy a new tranny($1500 at least) but I would actually come out cheaper getting this 96 gt considering the trade in (They only want 4 g's for the 96). I know they are not all that quick stock, but thats not an issue. So are there any major problem areas dealing with 96-98 gt's? .

the tremec 3550 or 3650 (later and current) are by no means "problemless" just check the sticky... the 96ish gts are good cars if you maintain them from my experience, used to have a 98 v6. (i know its on a gt, but still) the interior and the body in my opinion is a little below par and the engine would definately need uncorked, but if that is not a problem and you have a good deal go for it.

96-mid 01 = t-45 tranny

late 01 - present = 3650

the 3550 has not been a tranny in the factory mustang lineup

Exactly which transmission are we talking about here? An Auto, or a 5-speed?

Well, in that case….as far as longevity is concerned. The AOD-E is your only choice and for sake of argument, it’s really no tougher than the comparable 4R70W used with the later 4.6L cars. The only real advantage the 4R70W has over the AOD-E is better shift spacing. If you were to convert to a 5-speed, you’re again stuck with the same problem. The T-5 in your SN95 isn’t really a whole lot tougher than the T-45 used in the early 4.6L cars. Your car already came with the best of the best factory T-5’s and it’s strength level is pretty much on par. If you’re tired of you’re ’94 because of it’s age or condition, then that’s one thing. Otherwise, I’d consider having the AOD-E built heavily with a decent shift kit and stick her back in. A built AOD will take every bit the abuse that any built 4R70W or T-45 will take. I personally think you’ve just had it built by the wrong people in the past.

My 98 slush-box has been slipping since 40,000 miles. Sometimes the RPM's will hang when shifting from 1-2.

used to have an 4r70w in my 98, removed it for a tko swap with about 45k on it, no problems to report. Even had about 10k miles with a blower.

the t-45 is a good tranny, i like it better than the t-3650. Although the t-45 does have the usual weak spots, mainly the shift forks, i've broken 2 t-45's because of powershifting with badly adjusted/backed out shifter stops on my shifter, and aftermarket shifter with properly adjusted stops is a great insurance policy, other than that it's syncros wear out like any other tranny, I use royap purple ATF (dexron III/mercron compatible) with VERY smooth shifts and reliability)
