Ok my car has been running fine for awhile ever since i bought it. But now its winter and i dont really drive it. It usually sits their for like 4 days 5 days at the most and then i drive my brother to college. So im coming home from this place like 4 days ago "mind you nothing has been wrong with my car" im at a major intersection waiting for the light to turn green my car just stalls?. im like wtf like out of no where its like schokin when i try to start it back up and it wont start. i sit thier for about 4 minutes. Try and it starts and i drive home so im thinkin whats wrong with my car i drive it for the next 2 days. Fine nothing wrong then im on my way out the mall with my g/f and i hear this ticking noise im like ok? so i pull over and my radiator is like boiling over so im like ok well i got to let it cool down. "And also on my way to the mall noticing my heat doesnt work so that also made me think something is wrong".
So i let it cool down and im like **** i need to get some antifreeze in their. I leave in this buildings parking lot for like and hour go back its running fine and i drive it home. My cousins dad is a macanic he says try putting antifreeze in it it prob is bone dry in their so im like ok i do that and let it run for awhile the heat starts heating up a little so im like ok its cool. Then it sat their for 2 days and im trying to get it out of my drive way now it was running for like 10 mins straight. ideling little weird i would hit the gas my rpm would go down and then up?. But running fine i turn it off now it wont start back up it just like chokes its trying but wont i dont know what is wrong can someone help me...?

did you eve check the temp gauges?
if you didn't have a cracked head before, it is now.

simple. You overheated the car. the head cracks when it gets too hot. Thus, your head is cracked.
I would be shocked if the head didn't have a crack now, but I would also be shocked if the crack caused any problems. ANY turbo D port head you find is cracked... this is because of the extra heat of a turbo engine. Most NA heads will be fine... unless you overheat the engnie.

He means higher than normal temperatures, due to lack of coolant, can cause the head to warp or crack.

ok you've already used "like" 14-15 times....so quit that.

What bhuff is saying is that as things get hot they expand. When you antifreeze got hot it expanded and boiled over. Just like when your cylinder head got hot it might have expanded too. Very Very common on these even the non-turbo.

Your heat won't work without antifreeze. So it could be as simple your T-stat stuck shut, it ran hot and overflowed, then your heat didn't work because it didn't have any coolant.

well, I guess we have beaten around the real question long enough.
You overheated the engine. Your head is now cracked. There is a very slight chance that this will ever cause a problem until you take it to the machine shop, and your machinist tells you it is cracked.
there are lots of other problems that can arise from overheating the engine. If it runs fine, probably nothing major happen. It is possible that you fried your coolant temp sensor. This tends to happen when you oveheat it.
My recommended course of action:
1. make sure the coolant is full
2. watch the coolant level the next couple weeks
3. pull for codes to see if you fried a sensor
4. do a compression check to check for major damage.

my '90 apparently has a cracked head (it overheated twice in 2 days thanks to a non-functioning fan, while I was 500 miles from home), I drive it every day and it doesn't give me any problems

Why the F#@k would someone come to a message board designed to help car owners diagnose and fix their own cars, just to tell everyone that they are going to have someone else fix it???

It could being going out the exhaust. Now you can expect some water out the tail pipes, but if its green or smells like antifreeze then you got issues. Also if its got even a very small crack enough for air to leak out, it could cause the car to over heat and maybe without loosing water/antifreeze. I would be inclinded to pull the head my self and have it magna fluxed. I would also check the stuff the rest of the guys mentioned first.

Good Lock with it
