Acetone in fuel said to increase mileage...

Posted in V6 Tech by mistake, here it is again...

Anybody ever hear of such a thing??? I got a neighbor who swears by Acetone. Said that he saw a noticeable increase in gas mileage and kitp HP when using about 3ounces per 10gallons of gas. I was a little leary until I watched him pour some in his 06 Charger R/T. Said that you can buy it at your local hardware store in the paint department. With the price of gas going out of this world, i'm almost willing to try anything that's halfway safe... Here is one website below that talks about it. I'm sure there's more.

Yes, it has been discussed here before. From the research I have done it does work to a minimal extent.

yea ive done it and it does give you a minimal gain i didnt notice a whole lot because im not a consistent driver some days i just dog the heck out of the car other days im gentle with it so i cant really say how much exactly it helps.

Supposedly no known damage to O rings and seals and what not. It seems it will increase fuel mileage, but I think it is way more of a savings to fuel if you have a higher mileage vehicle that doesn't run as efficently as it used too, from my understanding. Cause on a newer car your not gonna realize that much of a gas savings as your car is pretty effcient. But hey every penny counts. I have never done it so my word really counts for crap.

I read that research a while back it seems pretty interesting, I was gonna give it a try in my winter beater, the mighty 92 Escort GT. See how it goes.

Reading that article was very interesting. Might try it in the beater truck or the Jeep.

It all makes sense though. Plus since its not labeled as a $19.99 product garunteed to boost your MPG up to 30% or a full money back garuntee, I do think it will work to an extent...

Only thing I would be worried about is it being corrosive to plastic. Then again, so is gas to a degree. But I guess this stuff is diluted enough so its not overpowering. The fact it said it can disolve asphalt definatly makes me think twice about it though.

Acetone is used to melt plastic as well - I have experience with it making my own center bezel for an in-dash touchscreen.

With it being mixed with gas though in that quantity, not sure what it would do to the seals... interesting.

Wasn't acetone a way to also get through emissions as well?

How does something which costs $15-$20 per gallon save you money when adding small amounts of it to your existing fill up?

Color me very skeptical...but like any other "Miracle" fuel additive if it works so well why hasn't it been adapted or incorporated in the current fuel offerings from major refineries? Must be a down side to it of some sort...

Well, to answer your question about the gas savings, you really only using an ounce or 2 per gas tank. 128oz in a gallon, therefore, you could get from 64-128 tanks out of a can of Acetone, and if you saved, say 40-50mpt, then you can finish the math... It will save money over time, but is it worth it in the long run??

I think the biggest reason is the degree of which it's corrosive.. As you know, it's not a Petro based product.. In terms of if you were to get Acetone on your skin, car's paint, sidewalk, etc.. what damage would it cause?? It's not like gas where you can have it dripping off of your hands onto the ground..

Plus, I'm not sure what the by-product of burning Acetone is... I imagine it's probably not very environmentally friendly..
