Besides the obvious "comfort" advantages are there any safety benefits gained with the aftermarket columns?
Which brands are recommended and why?
Cost?

Well, since you did not specify a brand I am only guessing here but I have to believe that just about any modern engineered column will be built collapsable and not be impaling you in the chest should you get in a collision considering you are comparing to a 66' column. That alone is safety benefit enough I think, or at least one darn good insentive.
