So from what I can tell the down side is the cats go bad faster? Looks like previous owner just put a shorter belt on, no clue if the pump is fried or not yet...Is this horrible? If it does cause an early death to cats is there anyone with experience on how fast they go bad? Thanks in advance.

If you're still running cats, you should still be running an air pump. Get the correct belt and reinstall. You run the risk of 'clogging' the cats and killing horsepower with the exhaust restriction.

I bought the car that way, and you can bet I'm not putting them back on. A hybrid without cats? Oh boy the irony, it's like getting stuck behind a prius in a racecar.

No kidding I was looking for some advice!! J/K I talked with the former owner and he said he just short looped it because the pulley was making noise so looks like I can just hook it back up....not in CA but in one of the 5 emissions counties in TX But hey 2.5 more years and no rules for me!!!

If you pull the cats and the air pump you will have a stinky car. You will want ths windows up at idle or a gas mask. We just had another thread about this, and yes, the cats need the pump.

had 3 fox body mustangs and a 2001. all with no cats and never noticed any smell for what it's worth. If you have no cats, then there is no reason to keep the smog pump. take it off and get a 84.5" belt.

No cats or smog pump here and no smell either. The pulley itself shouldn't make noise. If its making noise then the bearing in the pump is likely toast. Latemodelrestoration.com carries them pretty cheap. Slap on a new one and stock belt and roll on

No, who told you this?
You must not have been alive before 1975, because cars didn't have cats before that, and didn't stink when in tune.

If you have DUMPS with no cats, you may get an exhaust smell built up over time.

I have no cats and no smog pump at all. I haven't noticed a smell with mine yet and I have dumps. I also don't have much driving time on my car yet.

catless here and stinks to high heaven. what the deal is? i would love to leave them off like it is but you can't run the car without your clothes and the garage/yard being saturated in it.
