I have a 2002 mustang gt with vortech mongoose kit. I'm looking at getting a custom front mount intercooler. What do I need other than intercooler and piping and what is the average horsepower gain?

Mods:
V1 S trim mongoose kit
BBK 75mm throttle body and plenum
Flowmaster cat-back
Off road x pipe

You need a better bypass valve, like the vortech mini race. If you pulley down to a 3.2 pulley you will be around 10psi and be able to add more timing. Probably 30-40hp?

Usually you gain about 10-15 HP per degree of timing (when advancing). You can find all the piping and intercooler on ebay for dirt cheap.

I forgot to mention that I'm also running the MPH boost pipe. Will I still need to pulley down to 3.2 or should I use the 3.3. I'm sitting at 360 whp now and looking to reach closer to 400 whp. Also, when putting in the vortech mini-race, where can I get a flange from and that welds right onto the pipe, correct?

Thanks for the replies guys.

jivepepper, is that the front mount that you used because I have been looking at that as well. Did you need any additional piping or anything other than the mini race bypass or some other bypass/blowoff valve?

The intercooler its self won't make that much extra power other than the cooler air charge. The REAL gains come from taking advantage of the cooler air by running more timing or boost.

On the 2.3, we can't seem to run more than about 13-14psi without an intercooler (8:1 compression). With an intercooler, 18-20psi is no problem. You probably know well, but the torque and power gains from extra boost is amazing and nothing compared to a cooler air charge or the small gains people make from bolt-ons. My 2.3 probably gains 8-10hp per psi of boost, so I'd have to imagine each psi for you is 18-20hp. Of course, you'd better get the timing streightened out before upping the boost to much. Excessively retarded timing will cause high EGTs which is bad for lots lots of things.

It's very similar except the piping on this one looks better than what I purchased. I used 2 bypasses, a cheap greddy S bypass/bov knock off, and an upgraded bosch from an Audi. I would suggest a mini race it's eaisier to get set up right. Even though I have no problems with mine people find it dificult to get the cheap greddy working properly.
