Hey guys,

I am repainting a bunch of things in the engine compartment while i have the engine out right now and one thing that im not sure how to paint is the alternator. I am trying to get every thing original looking on a 66 coupe with a 289. So what is the correct color? Thanks

dave would be correct here. however if you are determined to paint them, which i have done on my car. you can either bead blast the housing and just clear it with either a gloss clear or a matte-finish or satin clear, depends on how original you wnat it to look. or you can use a flat aluminum paint like eastwood's aluma-blast or plastikote or krylon FLAT aluminum, don't use the HIGH-HEAT aluminum as it looks mor like that cheesy chrome-in-a-can crap, but you do need to use the engine paint that is designed for that purpose. i used the plasti-kote FLAT aluminum engine paint and then put a couple coats of gloss clear on it. i cleared everything in my engine compartment so it would be easier to clean. but for all those purists out there everything is the correct color under the gloss clear

Actually, one more thing. I got around to cleaning the thing up today and it looks like the little fan on it used to be painted black. Is that right?

most of them i have seen were gold cadmium or gold zinc not sure which, i used oldsmobile gold engine paint, it is not correct or even all that close but at a casual glance most people never know the difference. i have considered getting a chrome version and painting it with that new anodized look paint in gold of course, that would look a lot closer, but it might cost the same to just get the correct parts form someone like AMK products
