So here's my little tail.

All of my friends in Cinci here seem to think that AMC's are not any good, and that I should by an import of some sort, w/ a turbo charged engine and all that. Save one good friend of mine that's loves AMC's like myself.

From what I understand, Turbo/Super chargers dont kick in til a specific RPM range, or possibly these days when the computer feels the air/fuel consumption changed enough to kick in the chargers. As compared to having a big ol 4.6L V8 that has raw power from the low RPM range.

I Believe I am partly correct on this?

I am after instant torqification (comparing sport/muscle cars in stock form)

I'd like to respond to some of these guys in somewhat of a knowledgable fasion, as I get the unknowing impression that they dont know what torque really is.

Or maybe its just me, edgamikate me!

the turbo has to build up boost. the same is true for a centrifugal supercharger like the procharger, vortech, paxton, etc. a twin screw type supercharger like the whipple, saleen, or kenne belle, has boost at all times. those superchargers will give you instant power, without needing high rpms.

torque is what gets you down the street. horsepower is a function of torque. with no torque, you need to rev to 10,000 rpm, like the mazda rotary engines. they need that rpm to build boost with the turbo. torque is what allows you to do a burnout. with no torque, you cant spin the wheels.

Okay, so I'm kinda headed down the right path.

This is interesting to see:

The WRX STI:

# 300-hp 2.5-liter DOHC intercooled, TC'd boxer engine @ ????RPM?
# 300 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm

The Stang:

# 300-hp 4.6 liter OVH V8 @ 5750
# 320 lb.ft of torque at 4500

Damn near half the liters and probably 600 lbs less in weight. but torque specs are similar. What should this tell me when I'm comparing these two cars? That they are actaully similar in how they would fly off the line? What other factors am I not seeing here..

Also whats OVH?

A high revving four banger with a manual tranny can be a lot of fun. I just prefer them to be Italian and RWD.

600 lbs less in weight?

05-06 GT stang - 3488lbs
06 wrx sti - 3351lbs

thats 137lbs difference

Sorry there is no replacement for displacement. Support America and get the stang.

The American Muscle will give you rear drive excitement and only torque that a big V8 can produce, while on the other hand the WRX is all wheel drive and all the honduhs are front wheel drive and certainly are not as torquey as a V8. The V8 will rumble at idle and roar at WOT. A 4 banger with a fart can on the back will sound like a lawn mower. The WRX comes with a turbocharger stock, which is why it's as quick as it is. Buy longtubes, 4.10s and a tune for your V8 and you will smoke 99% of the imports, because most of them do not spend the money needed to make their little 4 cyl motor a serious powerhouse. I too have a lot of friends that prefer imports over American Muscle. And you know what happened when I traded my 01 V6 Stang in for the GT a year ago? Let's just say I don't even waste my gas on them anymore

No worries. I'd love to help out an American Company. I'm more or less curious about some things I don't know about is all There's a Mustang in my future. I'm like a Dog in the window when I see one go by. I think about owning one, driving one, and having a good time with my girl in one.

TO the Wilson's

Once you have a Stang in your head...theres no going for something different. I've had my eye on Stangs for the last 9-10 years. When I saw the RETRO'D 05 on tv before they were building them during an auto-show I knew that was the #1 I was waiting for. I was lucky I got mine pre-ordered and didn't have to wait as long as some other people I know did. My problem is after having it for over a year now...the dang cops are still trying to catch me being a BAD A- -. I'm as determined to keep them from catching me playing as they are to get me. I stick out like a sore thumb cuz I'm the only REDFIRE in the county AND I have personalized plates. ( And I'm sure they have made bets on who's going to "get me".) :SNSign:

Yea, I don't see anything from dodge I like, never was a dodge guy really, and GM, well, I'm still unsure of the Camaro as I think most are, nothing too solid on it yet, I am a GM guy. And I REALLY LIKE the looks of the GT500, even over the concept camaro. I like the modern retro look. The concept camaro may be a little too retro for me.

Your right Alice, I'm kinda set on owning a GT. Whether it's the GT Premium or the GT500, Now I just gotta figure out what color(s) I want!

You shouldn't underestimate the STI. A civic, scion, cobalt; these aren't sports cars, and the numbers prove it. But the STI is a sports car, as is the Evo, Supra and RX-8. The stock mustang will smoke the stock RX-8, and with mild modification, will also smoke the AWD twins. But not everything in life is a straight line of clean and clear asphalt. Different cars have different strengths and weaknesses.

And I know of a guy running an MKIV Supra in the 9's. Undoubtedly cost more to get to that point than it would for a mustang owner, but regardless, that's impressive and respectable.

As for me, I love muh stang.

True! They are good cars. But what they (my opinionated friends) need to realize are my own opinions. I like the midsized stang compared to these other cars I've sat in. Its' roomie. They complain that they're a dime a dozen, I don't care! I really dont care much about taking corners like I was on a race track. I'm sure the stang will do all the cornering I need

Mostly, I like the V8 and its sound, and the instant power, thats mostly what I am after

Again, just opinions!

a mustang is a dime a dozen compared to what? a civic? a WRX? a production car is a production car-they are all a dime a dozen as anyone can go and buy one. special editions like a cobra or the STi are a little different, but it is still the same basic principal. what do they want you to do? buy a civic, put a body kit on it, and call it one of a kind?

Some people brought up gas mileage, and right now thats not a big bother to me, that could change if prices go crazy. but 25MPG on the HWY isnt bad!
