Car won't start, the starter just grinds. If i'm lucky it'll engage, but I had to push-start it last time. Is this just a bad starter or something else? Also, how hard is it to replace the starter? I wouldnt' know because when I installed it, the engine was out of the car. Thanks peeps.
Sounds like a starter issue to me. Do make sure the starter hasnt fallen halfway out of the car before you go buy a new one. You can have starters bench tested at the parts stores (decent ones anyhow) if desired.
One thing i would check, even though this might not be part of it, but it was with mine, is check the motor ground and make sure its clean. But i agree the starter may have backed out a little.
Also check the flywheel teeth for excessive wear. But the starter gear is designed to wear before the flywheel, and this is the likely case.
The starter is 3 bolts i believe. It's not easy to get to them. IIRC I use about 3 feet of extensions and found a almost straight shot to the bolts from in front of the lower control arm (which was a life saver). Wobbles and u-joints are a necessity. A stubby ratcheting wrench would also help.
Don't forget to disconnect the battery unless you want your wrench welded to the starter posts!!!!
