the only reason to get one is if you install taller valve covers to clear the aftermarket roller rocker arms. The EGR and TB will hit the VC's w/o the 3/8" spacer.

Other than that, waste of time. It's slightly increasing the runner length which may help low end but costs you high end (affects are nominal).

There can be some benefit if using a phenolic spacer as it may isolate the upper intake a little from engine heat, but the difference will be negligible. FWIW, I'm running taller valve covers to clear my rockers, and I'm not running a spacer with no clearance issues.

frpp makes a .5 inch gt-40 spacer. whether that will clear or not, i don't know. maybe if you cut the hood a bit

They also make a 3/8 spacer if you are nervous about hood clearance.

I use one to keep my intake up off the plug wires for easier access to some stuff. Otherwise I wouldn't use it at all. The intake is still lower than the STB I have so I would bet the stock hood will clear a 1/2" pretty easily without the insulator in...
