the main reason the the K & N intake system is likley the best out (or soon to be out) is that it is automotive grade plastic

Plastic is superior in this application because:

-plastic is a terrible conducter of heat, ever touched an aftermarket aluminum intake tube? it gets hot. Cooler denser air makes more consistant power, modern composite intake manafolds are an example of this.

(have an '05 GT? go for a drive, get it hot, pop the hood and grab an intake runner)

-plastic is formable, the right hand elbow bend can be blown up larger and the shape tuned for smoother air flow (can't really do that with aluminum)

no, I don't work for K&N just thoughts / opinions

update 6-14-05, the K&N in it current state is not my top choice for max performance. the JLT and a tuner (when I can afford it) will be on my short list, I believe all still holds true for the wonders of plastic

BTW, there is no way that the K&N intake is the best on the market, its even recommended without a tune.

If you want the best and be made of a plastic please use the JLT.

hey, cleveland, been a while but I thought i'd here from ya.

I looked at the JLT site and it said coming soon for '05, have you seen the design yet?

my main point was about the design and material not really the brand name,
K&N is the only one I knew of so far with the full formed plastic design

is this from K&N? (i havent checked there site latley) never mind, I saw the post where you got this, I bet he will need a tune when the computer figures it out. and nothing on it on k&n site

do you have dyno numbers on any of the CAI (ones I've seen are not apples to apples as far as other mods)

I suggest reading through TheMustangSource.com for your answers since Stangnet seems to lack much in the tech section lately.

JLT CAI complete all by it self (you MUST tune) $150 in black.
All prices are for black, color upgrade is $25.

looks like a clean install but upon closer look I noticed two major HP robbing flaws (maybe to avoid a tune?)

1) the filter is on the small size

2) the tube close to the filter looks to be small diameter compared to others

-cleveland, are the HP #'s on the JLT just the CAI and the tuner?

how much gains for just the tuner on same stock car, but stock air intake?

what tuner would do you prefer?

The JLT is the way to go. You can get the tune from DTP. I will be posting a write up on my install and the process for getting the tune. I hope to have it done tmorrow morning. I will post a link in this thread

Actually I think that the filter supplied with the JLT is the largest one is use by any of the CAI manufacturers. I dont have the model number or dimensions with me, but I will get them tonight and post those for all to compare.

The tube closest to the filter is smaller than the rest of the tubing to the throttle body, but I think it is still larger than the others out there. I believe this section to be right at 4" but again, I will have to measure to get an exact figure.

i have a tune without any CAI (not a dyno tune, just a pre-boxed predator one), and 4.10s, donno what i dyno at but im only a mediocre driver and im running 13.2's on everything else stock

where is the heat shield with the JLT? it looks to me that the heat from the headers would get sucked into the JLT CAI. at least the K&N has a heat shiled. are some of you fabbing up your own heat shields? plastic is definately the wasy to go, but i think that a heat shield would be better as well.

I had my car tuned without any mods and gained 13 RWHP. SCT Tune with box tune from JDM.

Then a few months later I got the JLT CAI. I had the car dynoed before and after the install. It gained 21 RWHP (Mustang Dyno) with just the addition of the CAI and readjusting the tune. Had to redo the tune because of the difference in A/F ratio. Mine is also an Automatic.
The JLT intake is well worth the money and looks great.
I have been running mine without a heat shield without any trouble, however I did ask Jay to send me one now since I have a new Ram Air hood on order.
It should work even better with the fresh air from outside.

Notice the simple heat divider just behind the massive k&n filter of the JLT, it bolts down to the fender using the stock airbox mount location.

So basically are you are saying is that the CAI was worth +7hp versus just a tune? or did you gain another 21 on top of the 13 for a total gain over stock of 34 hp

JLT still has issues that need to be worked out. Performance wise it is great, but it still has flaws that need to be fixed. Jay is working on the fix, but there are issues. Steeda is more because of the name, and the quality.
