Ok some Im trolling around tonight, minding my own buisness when I get a little taste of the red and blue in my rearview. Aside from a nerve wracking sobriety test (blew a .003) I got a sitation for a loud exhaust. I have 15 days to correct the problem or I get a ticket. Does anyone still have their stock catted H-pipe laying around anywhere? I would REALLY like to borrow it for a few days. I have an 89' LX hatch 5.0. If anyone can help I would be very greatful. Thanks guys!

Tell me a little about your car. Does it have an O/R H with glasspacks or just flows?
If you had flowmasters then loud noises wouldn't be an issue. What about any exhaust leaks? If you can't tighten down the bolts then even with a stock pipe you're still sol.

I dont have any leaks that Im aware of. Just an o/r h with 2ch flows. Ive got a set of Magnaflows in the mail but they wont be here for a few days. If no one closer has a set I can drive down to Auburn. I have this weekend off...man its gonna be 95...with no AC this is gonna be a sucky drive :D

now, as far as i know we dont actually have a specific law about noise in wa. according to one person who posted on vwvortex.com... "Exhaust- ILLEGAL, BUT they cannot enforce it anymore because new legislation requires them to prove how loud it is and they cannot afford that equipment so they cannot give you a ticket anymore "
you can find that thread here.

last october's sport compact car magazine stated something to the effect that each local authority comes up with its own ordinance, however it looks like washington has adopted sema's legislation model which includes 95db limit on exhaust.

other sites that may help be able to help:

hope this helps!

Im not really interested in fighting it. It;ll take me a half hour to switch the h-pipes once I have them. Now if they actually gave me a ticket I might be more inclined, it just seems like too much trouble at this point. She just wanted to see if I was drunk and felt like she had to site me for something I guess. It was probably my fault anyway. When I rolled down my window and she asked do you know why I pulled you over I didnt want to say speeding...cause I was...so loud exhaust fell out of my mouth. She just cued on that I guess...still better than a speeding ticket.

Hey thanks Steve, thats very generous of you. Wanna hear your car with an O/R pipe? hehe I may take you up on it depending on my $$$ situation (driving to seattle is expensive). If I need you I'll post. Thanks again man :nice:

You look on Flowmasters (or whoever) website and get the CARB # that goes with their exhaust and present the number to the judge showing that it IS 50 state legal, and registers 92 (or whatever) db against the limit of 95 db. Since the officer had no testing equipment, and was just guessing as to the noise level as judged by their ear, it is easy to understand how they made the mistake, blah, blah, blah.... to which the judge should reply with a case dismissed.
****ing pigs forget that just because they dont like it, doesnt make it against the law.

Dave-

btw, I've had my fair share of cop trouble... been pulled over 5 times, in the course of 16 months... :nonono: so, what my lawyer has taught me was don't say anything! when they pull you over, act retarded and stupid at the same time! "do you know why I pulled you over?" - "um, no actually, why did you pull me over?" (in kinda dumb sounding voice :D) because everything, and I mean everything, goes on the "discovery" part of the ticket... I almost got screwed on my last ticket because I said, after the cop told me what I did, "oh, that..." which almost screwed me over royally!

and the second bit of advice is... just be polite, and try to know the law... like, they can't search your car w/o your consent, or warrant (or, if it's in their possession due to jail time...)

Marc,

Was it a city bike cop?? I can't imagine it was the county guy's, they are not quite as anal about that stuff.... I did a launch in the 400hp cosworth that probably would have netted me a low 4sec 0-60 time and there was a sheriff 2 cars behind me, he pulled up next to me (with a chew in) and says "going a little fast, you better slow down" and drove away..... :rlaugh:

Hey Steve If your still ok with the h-pipe swap I need to take you up on the offer. It wouldnt be until mon maybe tue (9th or 10th) I still havent recieved the alt bracket so the car is down but my time is running out for the inspection.
