Go pick up muscle mustang and fast fords mag, sept 2004, it says notch rockets on the cover and shows a red pony doing a wicked bad burnout, they have like a 10 page article with tons of different cams, dyno charts and all....worth the 5 bucks for the magazine...

I'd say go with the Comp 270s or VT stage lls. I think the Comps will sound a little meaner. As far as emmissions goes, I thought on 96+ cars if your check engine light isn't on they don't smog test it(though they still charge you). At least its that way in TX.

Yeah that's the way they are going to do it here in NC next year too. I am looking into getting the 270/274 comp cams, because I have a connection that can get a couple hundred dollars knocked off the price for me. I just havn't seen many people running them and wonder how the compare.

I am running the XE278AH comp cams in a 306 blown stroker with great results. Tremendous power from 2500 to 6000 rpm and a very noticeable rough idle...........

Not trying to be a smart-ass, but you can either go by a magazine with sketchy credibility or you can ask enthusiasts that have done the swap and had the cars dyno'd.

VT Stage IIs have seen a 29hp gain on an otherwise stock (except welded-in Flowmasters) '99-up GT. The numbers don't lie. All the "them there stage 2 thingies are too much for a stock head"-crap was disproven last spring when people started swapping cams like mad over at ModularDepot and started posting their numbers with Comp 270s and VT Stage IIs.

Why buy something that is "OK" when for the same money you can get something better

I would suggest going over to http://www.modulardepot.com and signing up for the forums. Search for cams and you will find a wealth of info.

Nick, why do you doubt the credibility of MM&FF? Of the mags out there, it would seem their tech stuff is pretty well done and thought out. I do however have a problem with Evan Smith claiming a stock Mustang GT can be a 12 second car with a little weight reduction and practice, yet he's never been able to make that happen himself. . . .

Joe347R6 So you have no problem with passing emissions in with the VT stage II? I live in Texas as well and the only thing stopping me from getting the VT II cams is emissions. As long as there are no codes going off Im good?
Thanks

The gains they got there some or most people will never see on their cars. It was on a totally built engine w/TEA heads, not the stock stuff some or most people are running. Go to modulardepot like the man said and do a search. Definitely check out the nitro lew video if you want to hear comp 270's in action on a killer car.

I don't know what codes would pop up due to a cam swap but I had my car tuned so if there were, they were taken care of.

Exactly. I took it that the original poster was doing the camswap on a stock bottom-end and no headwork. Many people on Modular Depot have done just that including myself. However, as stated above, the engine in the magazine was built. The two engines won't react exactly the same and you aren't going to see the same gains. HOT ROD and Car Craft pull this same crap in their mags touting "75hp Cam Swap!!!" or other nonsense on the cover. Then you find out that the motor has 12.5:1 compression, high-dollar heads (with high-dollar roller rockers), custom headers, tunnel-ram, 900cfm carb, and enough machine work on the block to give a machinist wood. Its a combo that most people can't afford, the cams are too big without the rest of the setup, and the article is completely useless to 95% of their subscribers. Same thing with the mod motor in the MM&FF mag. Most of us don't have the built engine and our stock blocks/heads aren't going to react the same way as the built engine.

The Comp 270s, VT Stage IIs, and one of the SHM grinds (2730, IIRC) are probably 3 of the most common cams used. There are few people on the forums that have used the XE262AH cams. They are very mild almost reminiscent of "RV" cams that you would buy for a SB Chevy or other pushrod engine. If I had a Crown Vic, I might use the 262s. The only GT that I can think of with 262s is TroyV at Modular Depot. He said he got them because he Auto-Xs with his car and that the torque curve suited him better for getting out of corners. If you're interested in drag racing, though there is no reason not to go to the XE270AHs. The power curve is still within the bounds of the stock heads and bottom end and you still retain good drivability. If I didn't already have a daily driver, I wouldn't hesitate to drive the GT every day.

BTW, as far as codes, there shouldn't be anything going off because of the cams. The only instance I can think of is if you had one (or both) of the cams off a tooth, there is a code that is stored in the EEC that is picked up by the cam position sensor on the driver-side head. One guy had this happen that I can remember. Luckily, he got the code and hadn't driven the car much and didn't have any catastrophic PTV issues.

As far as emissions go... In Illinois, on 96+ cars you pull in, they download codes from your computer, test your gas cap, and you are on your way.

I really liked the fact that the 262s had no power loss down low and still had a great gain up top and throughout the entire band. All others lost power down low and took until 4,xxx rpm to catch up to the stockers and pass em.

the guys who spent more time on the dyno with tuning equipment did not lose any power from 2500+......others lost a few hp/tq down low but you pick up so much up top(where it counts) that there isn't an issue...
