Cams to accompany headswap

I would put cams in if you are doing the headswap. I would go either with Comps or the VT. If you want to keep the stock PI springs go with VT stage 1 or use Comps NPI grind cams. Comps NPI cams have less lift but good duration for higher hp. If I ever switch to PI I will keep my Comps that I am running now.

Whats better more lift or duration? I'm having a hard time finding cams for my Headswapped '98. I keep hearing that this cam will work and this one wont. Then someone else say that one wont work and this one will. So I dont know what cam to get. I'm confused now!

look into the crower cams.. they have an excellent lineup of both NA and blower cams, for both low and high lift applications. i think it would be safe to say that if you stay with a stage 1 NA grind you should be ok with stock springs, but anything above that i would really invest the extra $200 and go with high rev springs and steel retainers. if you want to go the extra mile, get the springs and titanium retainers. personally, i did the titaniums because i dont feel like tearing the heads apart again to upgrade something. i had the heads built to just the way i wanted them before putting them back on the car, even if it costs you a little time it will be worth it in the long run. you should not see any driveability issues, esp. with a stage 1 cam. but once again, i would build the heads exactly the way you want them to be so you dont have to keep pulling them off to make changes; tearing them apart and putting them back on can get expensive. just my $.02, good luck with your build.

well a very crude way of putting it. Always remember, bigger is not always better.
Lift=Hp
Duration=RPM(where you power band is compared to engine speed)

I thought that lift was for torque while duration was for higher end hp.

i have heard that comp cams have piston to valve clearance problems but then i heard that they got that issue resolved if you get the newer produced ones? I'm wanting cams too for my ported PI heads. T&J performance is having a sale on their VT cams (which I have heard nothing but good things about those cams and even more good things about T&J) on their website. I think i'm gonna order a custom grind from them. You might check modularmustangs.net and search for cams. I believe there is a lot more people running cams over there than here. It was more beneficial to me at least. If you want to keep stock springs I would go with a stage 1 N/A grind but I'm still gonna upgrade to comp springs just to be safe. Let me know how your project goes.
