Can anyone tell me the trick to hook up the return line near the fuel filter(86GT)?

I've tried putting the clip in the line and sliding it over the fitting but it breaks. I've also tried putting the clip on the fitting and trying to slip my line over it but no luck there either. Is there a trick to it?

the plastic u style clips need to come out all the way and than push the line foward and than pull back try staying alittle wd40 on it and wiggle it back an forth should do the trick , anyway u can post a pic? ive been pulled my fuel tank to changed a pump about 4 times n my life haha its pretty easy just the line has prob never been off man.

It's the plastic retaining ring. The U-shaped clips were a breeze on the fuel filter. I keep breaking the dang things. Still haven't got

Should this be on the return line after I disconnected it or inside the rubber hose end?
