Working at an off and on pace, I finished it up in about three days. The only hard part was cramming the wiring behind the center console area (very tight but a coathanger helped a lot). I used:
1) your typical A9L computer $100
2) 1994 taurus/sable 3.8 mass air meter $23
3) a 50' spool of 16 gauge wiring $7
4) package of assorted heat-shrink tubing $10
5) A mass air kit from tunable induction w/ filter $117
I also had a lot of use out of my soldering gun with all of the wiring.
Number 5 really doesn't matter but for me it was one of those oppotunity things, plus I needed a new filter - but as you can see it was very cost-friendly.
Then you either need mass air or you can let your car sit a long time while you add all of your final mods and then get a tuner shop to reflash the stock SD computer with the appropriate programming.

Converting to mass air is only done if the car is unable to adapt to the mods done...I used the Ford mass air conversion kit from Jegs...no searching for parts, no wiring at all..just plug and play, installed in 1/2 hour. Now if the $$ is too high to go this route, then you can pc it together from junk yards/ebay/swap meets...much cheaper, but a little more work.
I just did a mass air swap...Sooo easy, solder 2 wires and push in 2 wires into the computer harness, and thats it. Hardest part for me was making the hole not too big in the firewall grommet and getting the wires through it lol I noticed Advance auto has rebuilt computers for stangs, manual, auto, convertable w/e, i think they wanted 100 bucks for one. If only i knew, since i paid 150 for mine from a junkyard, o well.
