Car makes clicking sound when trying to start?

When i try to start the car it give me that sound that you get when your battery is dead (the click). But the battery is brand new, and i just replaced the soleniod. today it started fine, i drove it around for about 20min came home and it wouldnt start. When i put the battery jumper on it, it will start right up! After it started i pulled it inside the garage and it started up agian with no problem? The battey is also in the trunk ans all the cables are new. Please give any ideas i've been fight this problem for months now and have no idea what else to do.
Things i've done:
Replaced batter (1000CA and 875CCA)
New solenoid
New started (summit high torque)
Battery cables tight on post
ground strap from head bolt to frame

Sounds like a loose conection on the battery terminal to solonoid or starter. Also could be the ground cable from battery to frame or frame to engine. You should have a good size cable - 2 ga or bigger for these. make sure there is no paint on the ground points.

Do you have long tube headers by chance ?

I do have the grounding strap from engine to frame but its not 2gauge, so ill change that today and make sure all the connections are tight too.
And yes i do have long tube headers, why do you ask?

My 70 did that and after exchanging the battery THREE times (confirmed dead) figured out the voltage regulator was bad. Might check that.

I have a 3g alternator on it now, but when the car IS running and all fans and pumps on it show a 14v charge at the batter. Could the regulator still be bad?

I'd say your charging system is ok, 14 volts is good with all the accessories on. That’s what I get with my 3G.

10secgoal has a good point about the headers. The heat from the headers being in close proximity to the starter causes “heat soak”. The extra heat requires more cranking power because it reduces the magnetism in the wiring of the starter.

This problem is usually experienced after you've been driving a while and shut is down, and it won't start after 10-20 minutes. A shield or "starter blanket" might fix it.

Replacing any loose or small battery/cranking cables will make sure you get the full current to crank.

I was thinking about that also, the starter getting too hot, but it also happens when it cold too. The last time it happened i let the car cool down for a few hours and tryed it agian with no luck. But i think i might put a heat sheild on it anyway. Thanks

Make sure the battery posts and the insides of the cable ends are clean.
