Hello all,

I want to buy some nice looking shorty headers for my 64 1/2 coupe (preferrably ceramic or nickle plated). It will have a 302 w/AOD. Just wondering what you guys have used or would recommend. Seems like Jegs and Summit don't list anything specifically for clasic mustangs, and I am worried that if I just buy any header for a SBF I will run into clearance problems. Right now the car doesn't have exhaust, so don't have to worry about mating up to anything existing... Any help is appreciated!

thanks,
MIke

I would recommend FPA longtube headers as none of the other big names will have a solution. FPA headers are very well built, have ceramic option, excellant ground clearance and likely will be the last header you'll buy for that car.

I have FPA longtubes on my 302/AOD with Magnaflow X-pipe system.

I have a 65 coupe with 302 & AOD and use the hedman elite shorty.
Fit is good.
They have been on about 1 or 2 years (daily driver) and So far they still look good.

None of the long tube I tried would clear the AOD.

I have a 347 stroker in mine with an AOD, and i also run the Hedman Shorties. Not much room for anything bigger. These seem to work great so far.

go to hedmans website, and find the headers to fit your car (elites are worth the extra money) then, either call, or go to summits website, and check the numbers... i went through this same deal 2 months ago, they stock alot more than the catalog shows...

Thanks guys! I checked Hedman's site and looks like the Elite for my car is part #88408. Also did you go with the Thermal or ceramic coating? From the pictures, I can't see any difference.

A StangNet member (sorry, don't recall his name to give him props) created a header fitment database specifically for classic Mustangs. Here is the link:

http://www.stanginfo.com/Headers/headeroptions_view.php

Also, you should think a little bit ahead about other mods you have planned for the car to avoid beating your head into the wall later. For example, if you are planning a T5 or other transmission swap, the clutch mechanism options have header fitment considerations. Another example is rack & pinion conversions will only work with specific headers. Ceramic coating is a worthwhile option (I did it) but is expensive. You don't want to have to toss them 8 months from now to do that R&P swap you had planned.

shorty headers would help with a rack and pinion later on, if that's in the plan. Long tube headers and R&P don't play well together. Worse yet, my long tube headers are ceramic coated, had to be cut and rewelded, and are now in the process of being recoated. You might want to get the headers, assess the fit issues, then get them coated.
