4.10's are the taller gear? Usually people consider low gear ratios tall gears.

if you are asking the difference between HP & TQ, you are about to open up a big debate if the right people see it. but here's a very general way that it was described to me. TQ is what makes you move, HP is what makes you move fast. i'll give you a opposite for instance of mogs...........

if you see a semi going up a steep hill & he's going really, really slow. well at some point the truck would stop if he didn't have enough TQ to pull his weight. but a diesel engine produces high abounts of TQ, but not high amounts of hp, that's wht they never stop going up a hill, but they will go slow.

No idea what the question is but a s2000 probably has a higher gear ratio, that will allow it to use its RPM band more efficiently. The motor probably produces its torque higher in the RPM band and with the taller gears multiplied to the torque out puts of the motor, it probably makes more torque than the other car at the tires which equals acceleration. When you produce your torque higher in your RPM band, it allows you to use a taller gear ratio. LIke a 4.10 compared to a 3.27. The 4.10 is considered a taller gear.

Or it is because that car is lighter than the other one.

torque is what gets you down the track, hp is what you brag to your unknowing friends about.

HP is how fast you hit the wall. TQ is how far you move the wall.

The reason diesel engines are so torquey and usually have lower HP numbers is because of their redline.

My friend's 7.3l f-250 redlines at like 3k RPM.

Since HP = (torque * RPM)/5252

HP is dependant on torque and RPM's.


Lets say the 177lb/ft TDi redlines at 5000RPM (if max TQ were at redline)

and the 164lb/ft s2000 redlines at 9000RPM (if max TQ were at redline)

(177 * 5000)/5252 = 169 hp
(164 * 9000)/5252 = 281 hp

BUT

s2k w/ 5k RPM RL
(164 * 5000)/5252 = 156 hp


Although the TDi created more "power" at a given RPM, the s2000 can handle a lot more revs which, as mogs stated, allows for much better gearing and therefore more acceleration.
